So i bought my first Lexus and thought i had done my home work, Seems not enough.

I purchased 220d 2008 plate with 95k on the clock with a full service history up until 2019,

I paid 2k for it as it looked in great condition and well looked after, after i test drove the car and drove it home about 15 miles away i noticed the white smoke and after finding out the previous owner for the last 4 years has only done about 4000 miles a year and mostly short journeys,

I have had the care checked out on a diagnostics twice in the last 2 weeks and only done about 300 miles in the car mostly motorway miles hoping its a simple regen for the dpf and the smoke did go but over the last few days there has been a knocking noise from the engine and more smoke,

Had it in to a jap specialist place near me ans again no fault codes and told me it could be injectors or piston rings or turbo,

I am now left scratching my head what to do next,

So any advice would be great, Its my first post and Lexus so be gentle.

Sorry to hear you have problems, but how much ‘homework’ did you do prior to purchasing the 220 and why did you not lean towards the 250, the 220 has ( IMHO) got a tarnished history for not running as it should and it seems to work best if used for long/regular journeys, something yours did not apparently and so it is now behaving like it does. I have no answer for a ‘fix’ but hopefully someone who has exactly the same symptoms will post soon, you are not alone sorry to say.

Quite recently i had to return a IS220 due to a failed turbo. This resulted in smoke from the exhaust and under the bonney. It wasnt blue, grey or white but more of a mixture but to be honest my eyesight might be different to others so subtle colours don't poke out to me as much.

Anyway if you pop the intake from the turbo off i had oil by the turbine on the inlet which was being sucked in creating the smoke.
This might not be your problem but it's a quick 2 minute check to see if yours has an issue there. If you do many short journeys then the IS250 might be better altho the manual costs £50 a month in tax and the best i've managed is 22mpg typically it sits at 17mpg due to my driving style. This is using the E10 fuel. I'm about to test E5 to see if i can push a 28mpg in this car.

Hi Morph, I feel your pain. Same issue started happening to my is220d as well.

I opened the intake side of turbo while cleaning the hoses and there was little speck of oil and breather pipe was dryish. Don't think I am getting oil into the turbo.

Definitely noisier around the injectors like a clicking noise, so annoying but seems to have gotten worse. It has always been there like tuppets but got used to it.

Waiting to get the injectors pulled after reading data using Techstream hopefully weekend.

Photos of my injectors, next step try to find out if any of them is broken or if it's something else.

White smoke is either steam, see head gasket or if smelly its unburnt fuel.

is there any oil in the radiator headertank?

is there any mayonnaise muck or heavy condensation on oil filler cap.? Thats leaking head gasket, water is getting into cylinders and coming out as steam and some is going into the oil .

some oil may get into the radiator header tank.

take head off only after watching 1000 utube videos , clean everything and refit with a new head gasket.

I doubt it is headgasket, my last is220d had that weak headgasket leak on cylinder 2 and this is totally different. Hope I will pick up saved code related to injectors when I run Tis.

I have the same smoking issue. My 220d is on 119k. Took off the large diameter pipe leading from airbox to turbo to find 2 small pools of oil. The smaller pipe that is connected to the large pipe and leads to the top of the engine was also a little moist with oil. Also under the turbo is quite damp with gritty oil too. The car pulls like a train so I can't see the turbo being knackered. Any ideas on what to do next guys? For some reason it wont let me upload pics, saying server issue. 

im based around Newport NP11 area if anyone could meet or advise where I could take the car that isn't going to cost an arm and leg

Hi Hoppy,

Mine has taken the turn for the worst, now it doesn't start at all. The small pool of oil is not an issue, I have always had that even in my previous cars, its likely injectors (5th injector which I changed and the car stopped starting, keeps cranking).

Maybe my fuel or glow plugs, desperately looking for someone who is competent enough to fix it too. Best of luck, Hopefully it's just the 5th injector. That's where I should have started anyway.
