After 30K km or more on my Ibis Mojo, 10 or more on a Focus and I do not remember how many on the bikes I do no longer have (no bike computers telling me), I have learned, among many other things, that keeping fit is easier than to get fit. Also, that a bike can take you to beautiful places where no car (except maybe a Unimog, which would not be allowed there) can come.

People that know nothing about riding a bike make the rules and we follow, or maybe not.

Here are a few pictures from this beautiful island that even though it is a place visited by very many tourists few have seen:

cars & cycles dont mix, the potential speed & weight differentials are too big. Whether the cyclist was in the wrong or the car driver, the cyclist always loses. People accidentally drive into motorbikes because they didnt see them all the time, cyclists are even worse, not least because some of them seem to have no fear, will go out on their bike in the dark in dark clothes & no lights or reflectors on their bike. I think they are going the wrong way with the rules. 

Put the bicycles back on the pavements, make them give way to pedestrians. Cyclists should use cycle paths or lanes wherever possible & if none are available they should use the pavement, when riding on the pavement give way to pedestrians, slow down or dismount if its unsafe to pass or is busy, use pedestrian crossings. End of the day if a bike runs into a person its probably not going to kill them, if a car hits a person its carnage.

If they have to allow cyclists on the road, make them take an actual test & be licensed/ a CBT type test, have standards for the condition of the  brakes/tyres & the riders gear. No helmet, reflectors, lights in the dark etc means you get stopped & fined if caught. 

Its a contentious argument for some, I guess the government would rather add fuel to the car vs bike fire than invest in more cycle routes & segregated lanes to keep them safe. I wonder how many people dont even know the rules have been updated or changed, they didnt write to every driver in the country to inform them did they.

Anyway, it should be a 2 way street, more accountability for drivers, more accountability for cyclists.

Fantastic vistas John, who would have known? Might a horse be a more comfortable way to get there 🤔🙂

Some of the places are very rocky with lava sharp as glass. Some other, would be possible. Do not see many horses here.

Presumably you run tubeless? Need to think about that on that road bike.

Tubeless, Quadboss sealant (does not dry out even here when it is hot - latex based sealants last only a month or less here). Never needed to walk home. Except once when a friendly owner of a banana plantation gave me one of these

Never needed to walk home, but changing tubes by the road is pretty common. In summer its fine, today when it was near zero, with cold fingers not quite as much 'fun'. Still much much more fun than tackling in the same road in a car :).

 

The commuter bike has no such issues, but its built up to handle pretty much anything, the Marathon 38mm tires are 980g EACH, so nearly 2KG in tire weight alone, thank goodness for the electric motor 😄.
