Maurice, I think for the benefit of the forum it might be a decent idea to ignore each others views on this subject, we are it appears at an impasse. Not so elsewhere where I value your contributions.

Fair enough.

Do i hate bicycles or cyclists? of course not! Each to their own. I do not understand the prices of todays bikes though, thousands of Euros without problem. I would always buy a car for that!

I probably spent 1hr+ on the road today when out gallivanting on the bike, I must have been passed by hundreds of cars. Not a single driver (even white van man), displayed any aggression or impatience some people on here seem to have for cyclists.

Infact in over 2 decades of using my pedal bike on the roads I've only been hit by inattentive drivers twice, both times at relative low speeds, I've been hit more often by other drivers when in my car! 99.99% of car drivers luckily treat cyclists with alot of space/care.

As for cost of bikes, now that am 'at peace' with car ownership, am going turn all my best man maths skills to bikes. I've never been able to 'treat' my self to my 'dream' bike like I have done with cars, but I think its about time given my now very clear ambivalence to cars.......

My current 10 years old road bike is a trusty Trek Madone from the Armstrong eria, the nature replacement given my older age would some like the newly updated Domane eBike. The price isn't a typo, it's expensive but compared to our cars it's actually pretty cheap. I fear for my bank account, its going to be when not if, this thing ends up in the garage. For me any ways something like this is far more exciting than any potential car purchase!

Applying man maths to cars is a skill I have honed well, for example the combined cost of our cars may be £105k but actually we have owned one for 7 years the other 5 years.

If sold now to WBAC both together would give us back £65k, so the actual cost of owing the cars is £40k.

Per year of ownership therefore is coming out as £3,300. Per month that's £277 between us, so for each of us to own a car each = £138/month. Some people spend that much on Sky each month!! So actuallt the total ownership costs of our cars so far is almost a 'bargain'.

So we gone from a crazy 6 figure sum spend on cars to a cost that is barely more than what you can waste on a TV package :).

It takes years of practice to get to this level of car man maths, I need to do the same with pedal bikes!!!

We need a ‘man maths’ justification thread! 😅

Definitely Ed. If that's man maths we're all in trouble 😱. It's more like a "Janet and John discover how to calculate TCO".

I had to look TCO up…(Total Cost of Ownership from what I can see - correct?)

I’m more than happy to admit that ‘normal’ maths - and science for that matter - isn’t exactly my specialist area. Man maths on the other hand -that I can get my head around!

I often justify my 2004 MINI Cooper, owned from new and hardly ever used, in a similar way. It helps when I have moments of weakness…

Mazda 6 vs Tesla Model X

Mazda 6 was £13k new in 2009, worth about £1500 now. However its only done 45k miles in its life at 30mpg, so £8800 in fuel, £220/VED × 13 years. So £23k total ownership costs excluding servicing = 52p per mile.

49849616497_b127caa2f1_c_d.jpg

75D Model X, £71k new in 2017, worth about £50k now. Done 65k miles, average cost of electricity is 3p per mile = £1950 in fuel. £0 VED. So £23k total ownership cost excluding servicing = 32p per mile.

51370230928_7f22b35071_c_d.jpg

So the total ownership cost per mile to run our Mazda 6 is considerably MORE than our Tesla.....

So there you have it the cost of owing a 'shed' versus something as that is frankly as ridiculous unnecessary as a hotel with a plane jetty, in black and white, the numbers simply don't lie :).

I think you definitely should be our next Chancellor of The Exchequer or indeed the Prime Minister who is, I understand, First Lord of the Treasury  ( have I got that right ? )

............. then we can safely rest asured that all is well with the Kingdom and in your safe hands

What would it cost to borrow £71k for n years in 2017?

Or did he have it in his back pocket ?

I think that formula would never be known in general terms ......  depends who you are as the Borrower methinks ........... a good creditworthy soul, or a bad creditworthy one ... a nation borowing, again good or bad, UK or Argentina ......  or like me, only ever put my hand in my pocket to take out loose change that never earnt me a sue in interest ......  indeed deposit interest rates now range between say 0.001% and probably nigh on 50 / 60 / 70 / 100% if you're borrowing from your credit card company

It's OK tho' a ganzoom Chancellor can make it all up as he goes along ...... the figures never lie eh !:yahoo:

Exactly, and Net Present Value, inflation, opportunity cost if it was in his back pocket 🤠

The man maths played by all our governments makes any car man maths look pretty pathetic. Quantitative easing has made lots of people lots of money from nothing, and indirectly pretty much everyone in the country had benefited from it.

Given money is entirely made up in the first place its hard actually to argue against mordern financial solutions as long as the general population is benefiting.

As for my figures, feel free to point to out any of the numbers that are wrong :).

I can tell every £1 in my name has been gained through old fashoined work. In 2005 I was living off 10p pot noodles and in a renting a room in a shared house with 4 random strangers, with a £70 Halfords bike as my old mode of transport.

My biggest regret in life is not been financially 'braver'. There are plenty of people who have made fortunes by taking advantage of the financial strategies set out by our government, and than there is cryptos....

and then there is the Sage of Omaha .  dear old and ancient Warren Buffet who, bless his soul seems to be the one and only in the news from time to time with his head generally screwed on straight ...........he thinks crypto will probably go up in it's own puff of smoke .............. the more it's adopted by dopey economies in South America and Africa and the general public buying this stuff suddenly finds Aunt Agatha's bequest has really now diminished to zero value ......  More Tea Vicar ( as someone said here recently

Ho hum  ....  let's all vote for Ganzoom to be the next Chancellor at least ......... in the absence of anyone else suitable to replace the, to my mind, brilliant Rishi when he's elevated to be Prime Minister coz methinks he's probably the only politician of all and any persuasion, with his head screwed on right these days ........... a Warren B in the making maybe and probably the best we can muster for Good 'ol Blighty :wink3:

Teetotal to the Tee eh !

Unlikely. He will be fired in the pre-recess reshuffle and will be off to Silicon Valley, where he will join Sir Clegg in making some real money.

Not so sure about that at all ... his devout Hinduism might get him into family family family life ........  his need for any more ££££ doesn't exist

My fear is that he will be lost to UK politics and benefitting our country  .. it will be a sad day should that ever happen methinks

I believe that there are people who think the same about not buying enough lottery tickets. 🤯. As to your valiant efforts in self advancement - Bravo 👏. So applaud the principles of Western Capitalism which encourages hard productive effort in exchange for enabling your aspirations. 😎

Never in my wildest dreams 20 years ago could I have imagined to be in position am lucky enough to be in now. Yes it's required hard work and luck, but the social progression offered in the UK is 2nd to none. I couldn't read or write even the English alphabet in 1990!!

The most astounding thing is I still no where near the 'peak' of my career or earning potential. But life is now comfortable enough, I don't need to be LED by ££££, instead am lucky enough to follow what am interested in doing 🙂.

I'll be doing 20 miles or so commuting around the city on my pedal bike tomorrow, frankly all the stuff here been 'debated' over really has no impact on the really important stuff in life, family and been happy with yourself. It just happens pedals bikes for me really help with happiness 😀.

Too true! Happiness should not be your goal but instead, contentment. This comes about  not by getting what you want but wanting what you already have, and more importantly remembering why you wanted it in the first place. 😎

Tried a new commuter route today, what better way to start the week than cycling along totally empty foot paths with scenery like this 🙂
