Heat shield = £355

Hi

 

Went in for a hybrid health check at the LEXUS dealership and they said my heat shield for the fuel tank and exhaust are missing.

Basically £355 to put them on but anyone know if it really makes a difference as i've been driving around without them a haven't noticed anything. 

Anyone ever had it done?

two of mine ( are there more ? Ls400 ) have been surgically removed quite recently, well, over the past few years, as they were rattling and loose and seemingly vestigial weight adornments it seems

You obviously don't want your fuel tank, and therefore fuel, to get too hot!

I'd imagine there is a huge safety margin here to account for hotter climates, driving the vehicle very hard and possibly an engine not running correctly so the exhaust temps are a little higher than normal. But we are never going to see the development data when the engineers were testing if a shield was needed or not so it is best to assume you do need it.

Personally I would not risk second guessing the development engineers…but that’s just me. I like not being on fire.

Like the knowledge people have advised: It is there because it is needed. Lexus engineers do not make the cars more expensive than needed in production. Lexus want to keep customers alive so they can buy more, hopefully from Lexus.

Do not know. Think that Lexus was doing what they think was best when introducing a new brand. Safety has not been a problem with Lexus as far as I know. Exhaust pipes can burn for various reasons and should that happen a heat shield is not a bad thing to have. I would install a heat shield in our car if Lexus find it needed; but we are all different.

Well we have moved on 2.5 years since OP but they are available at Lexus Direct for a third of that price now 😅

No it's not. A heat shield doesn't affect body structure or rigidity so doesn't matter if it's there or not. Many eventually loosen and start rattling then get removed as one on my old Rav did, not a problem.

I mentioned way back under my old name ( lost my password ) that on the Ls400 they seem to be effectively vestigial attachments and dropping off and/ or removal of loosening shields seem to be the norm and ok …… for 00’s of ‘000s of miles 🤞

But that’s just my limited experience with the Ls400

Nothing to do with rigidity - it is to do with fire risk, in which case it is a failure. How an MOT tester knows there was a shield fitted as standard and that without one there is an actual fire risk is debatable and therefore you are likely to get away with it.

I guess best to ensure you don’t get your MOT done at a Lexus garage (as good chance they would know!)….

Heat shields are usually aluminium with some having a thin  layer of insulating material sandwiched between the aluminium   As on many cars fitted with them the area of aluminium through which the steel fixing is made tends to suffer through catalytic interaction resulting in the heatshield breaking free and rattling.  You can often effect a cure that works for quite a time by using large washers to refix. (I have done this on my old 5 Series BMW).  However, sometimes, and I have experienced this, the heat shields can become heavily corroded (may be due to heavily salted roads) and almost disintegrate, so a new or reasonably good used one is required.

I also feel that it would be good practise to replace any heat shields that are missing or are beyond repair.

Replaced mine a year or so ago because the 4 connectors had broken free, it was just lying wedged on the box rattling. Not sure where the £355 figure came from though mine cost £115 from Lexus direct.

Trust me, if any car maker could save so much as 5p per car to not include something, they'd do it...  It must be there for a reason. 

I'd say look for it used online or in a scrap car, or fashion your own make shift one out of a suitable / similar material that will do the job if you're inclined to save a few £?
