Smoke problem

My Lexus from 2006 has been producing a lot of smoke after a mile or two most of the time. Sometimes the quantities can be really embarrassing. Yesterday's level smoke scared me. Now I am not driving it. Any advice? I have read some posts where people were advised to disconnect the Battery etc.

Hi Desta and welcome to the LOC.

From your numberplate I see you have a Lexus IS220d.

What colour is the smoke?

When the smoke happens are there any other problems like a lack of engine power?

Any warning lights on the dash?

There are some known causes but more information would help us to help you. 😀

It is white smoke. I don't see it when I start the engine. But after a mile or two, it often comes. Sometimes I smell diesel.

When the smoke happens, there is a slight lack of engine power. Otherwise, the car runs really well.

No warning lights.

Have a look at this thread, you could try disconnecting the battery first as mentioned which will cost you nothing but remember you may have to reset the auto windows.

Thank you very much, Steve. I read through the thread. Very helpful. My son and I disconnected the Battery for ten minutes and reconnected it. We then drove for a little more than 2 miles. I could see some smoke but not very much. Then while parking, I saw no smoke at all. I am going to drive again tonight and see how it goes. I was going to take it a Lexus garage tomorrow but from what I have read so far it is only the Bristol garage that is able to solve the problem. When I called one Lexus garage today, it quoted £1800-2000! The one I was going to visit tomorrow has quoted £1200. Sounds insane really.

I would find a local independent garage with Lexus experience rather than a dealership. Make sure they have access to Techstream the Toyota diagnostic system and knowledge of the D4D engine.

If it turns out to be a faulty 5th injector, software issues or a wiring problem a decent garage should be able to sort it for a fraction of Lexus prices.

I don’t know what’s going off with Lexus at the moment with the warranty changes and increases in repair costs but those quotes are horrendous!

ah the infamous 5th injector attempting spuriously to regen the dpf

5th injectors, DPFs and EGR systems, Ad Blu, emissions scandals, cracked EGR pipes.....no wonder I buy petrol imports

Thank you again! Smoke problem seems to have gone at the moment. Driving last night and this morning, I did not see any smoke except some puffs going uphill. Will see how it goes. Finding a descent garage with Lexus knowledge has been difficult but will keep looking for one.
