Today I'm going to moan about the heat. It's too hot!

That late Summer blast seems to have ended. It’s dull, damp and much cooler here today - it’s not even forecast to reach 70F which will be something of a blessed relief!

Amen to that! Even a biblical thunderstorm yesterday with sideways rain didn't cool things down much.

Today I'll mainly be moaning about the A30 through Cornwall. We've been visiting the South West for over forty years and I cannot recall a time when the A30 wasn't being 'improved'. Anyone know when the widening scheme started?

Second moan, the M5. Northbound yesterday was solid for over 10 miles! I'm really looking forward to the journey back!

On the good side, the Radar Cruise is fantastic for queues and the MPG averaged 55 so I'm very happy with that.

I was always under the impression that the A30 was a Roman road - well, that it followed the original anyway. If that is the case then I’d suggest the widening scheme started sometime after AD43…😆

Maybe right. Fosse Way, Watling Street, Athirtyum. Sounds possible to me!

gave us Latin  .......  the mother of all modern languages, well, unless you're Greek ....  and we seem to excel with their yoghurt for some strange reason that escapes me !

I need to moan about the younger generation not understanding my cultural references. I’m quite happy not to understand their cultural references - that’s just sensible - but they should learn Monty Python at school, amongst others!

Not quite sure how Latin can be the "mother" when Greek not only preceded it by more than two thousand years but thousands of Latin words are loaned from ancient Greek!

As to yoghurt, well, it's a living, vibrant ecosystem that can only be fully appreciated when consumed by a similar energised body 🤣

The A30 to ancient languages in a few easy steps, where else would you get this in a car forum!😁

I have another moan. Telephone call centre messages before they put you through. I listened to one today that was four minutes long!

First telling me that the wait would be longer than usual because it was an ‘exceptionally busy time’ (it wasn’t - once the automated messages finished I went straight to a human being), reminding me that it would be easier to book online at www.company.com (it isn’t, that’s why I’m calling!), then telling me about COVID restrictions they have in place (really?) and finally reminding me that ‘if I have a pet, it will need to be kept in a separate room when they visit.’

This was my favourite. ‘A pet.’ Any pet? What about a goldfish? Do they even realise how ridiculous these messages are now?

Especially this forum that posted twice.

And to be a bit more specific, everything going on in todays world of neutralising every thing and everybody, gender quotas, making TV adverts supposedly more representative of todays population when in fact it does just the opposite, whitewashing literature and history, open house to every villain in the world and just generally unpatriotic opinions, the few remaining old WW2 soldiers must wonder was it really worth it all.

Fortunately when I come out of my depression I realise that the majority of people feel as I do, the ones that make all the noise are a minority with big voices.

Come the revolution comrades 🤣

(PS I'm not a marxist, I see my self as a left wing capitalist or a right wing socialist, on reflection that's worrying, doesn't that make me a liberal!!)

To be fair, advertising has never really been about representing society as it is. If that were case then ads for fast food, frozen pizzas, and oven chips would depict uncouth mothers yelling at fat kids, beer ads would show yobs fighting in pubs, and gambling ads would show losers deperately placing their last pennies on the final race, and struggling to pay their debts.

Instead advertising has always been somewhat aspirational in its approach, however unrealsitic that might be. In some cases that aspiration is for a society where all people are seen and treated equally, regardless of their colour, culture or preferences. A society where such differences are invisible. So, whilst I'm not a fan of political correctness, the fact that some people notice, and are even bothered by the fact that some people in ads are "different" to them, suggests that we're still a long way from that goal. Like you, I'd like to see a society in which we didn't need enforced quotas for anyone different. However, I don't think that's possible until we have a society in which we don't see other people as being meaningfully different.

Not having a go at you Bill, as I too sometimes wince at things I see, and instead am just making an observation, and giving my thoughts as to why such things are done.

PS I've never heard it decribed that way before, but I think I too am a left wing capitalist, or right wing socialist. Power to the people (and their financial advisors) 🙂

Think of it in time passing Malc, if you counted one per second then one trillion seconds of ordinary clock time =( 1012 sec)/( 3.16 x 107 sec/yr) = 31,546 years! About the same time ago as the first pottery known on planet earth 😱
