Saw a couple of posts about the boot not unlocking. There is a switch in the glove department that sorts this problem.

Hi Patrick and welcome to the LOC.

I’ve heard that road tax in the Republic is higher than here in the UK, are hybrids cheaper ?

Pictures are always welcome 😀

Road tax €190 p/y

Average price of lwr to midrange lexus 15 to 28k

For cars registered after 2008 is cheaper than for those registered before: as example a 2007 GS450H pays 1,809 euros while the same model in 2008 pays 790 euros. This is the absurdity of the Motor tax in Ireland: you can buy a 2006 GS 300 for 3,000 euros and pays 1,494 euros in Motor tax. Does it make sense?

On the other hand you can buy a 2019 RX450H for 72,900 euros and pays only 280 euro in Motor tax. No logic at all!

It gets stranger here in the UK, a post 2001 Lexus LS430 ( so based on emissions) costs £315.00 a year but my 2004 imported Toyota Celsior ( same car but Japanese model) costs me £280.00 based on engine size over 1549cc.

It anyway does not make sense that a car which costs 72,900 euros pays only 280 euros and my 2004 Prius which is maybe worth 1,000 euros pays 413 euros and certainly does not pollute more than a 3.5cc engine. Motor tax should be based on emissions but also on the value of the car. Why a 2006 GS450H which costs 4,000 euros should pay 1,809 euros while it has the same emissions of a 2008/10 model and especially its value is much lower after 15 years? The second hand market in Ireland is full of cars with big engines and in excellent conditions with accessible prices but that nobody buys because of the ridiculous motor tax. Here below some examples:

But these are still reasonable rates for motor tax.

I pay £20 per year on my 2014 GS. How does that make sense???

I remember thinking "oh yes - cheap car tax" when I bought my IS300h. My smile soon faded when it turned out that instead of paying £10, I had to pay £145 as it was built after 31st March 2017. Same car, same emissions....

With all due respect, nothing compared to what we pay in Ireland especially for cars registered before 2008.
