Well said Barry.

I suppose a significant review of the N.H.S. is long overdue and I cannot imagine that Beveridge could have possibly forseen the range of treatments that are currently offered to the Taxpayer.

Many of us will agree/disagree that this or that should be treated at the Taxpayers expense, but nevertheless it is.

Has become ungovernable/unmanageable and should perhaps be broken into Specialised and Discrete compartments, I feel!

Not really a subject for a Motoring Forum though!

^^ It might be an entertaining debate for a separate thread…but shouldn’t hijack this one as this one has been both reassuring and so positive in lots of ways. What a great forum where so many members are willing to offer genuine support and advice. Lovely.

What about all these Car Clinics?

Or are they all privatised?

Thanks Phil. I did mean Beveridge as he identified in the early 40`s the problems which needed to be addressed. Beavan was the Minister in the Labour Gov`t who overcame fierce opposition to the idea of the  N.H.S.

Pretty good spot though. Have you seen the Beveridge Hall in the University of London ?

this is now getting way-off the very serious subject matter for Piers ..... unless he's getting cheered a little by the usual diverting from the MRI issues which I think we're all actually making quite genuine and real light-heartedness of ............ from our real-life experiences over recent times

It’s interesting to note that when the NHS was first mooted, it was anticipated by some that the cost of running it might actually go down.  This was based on the hypothesis that the health of the Nation would be so improved that there would be fewer calls on medical services.

One reason why that didn’t happen is as a result of such innovative technology as the MRI Scanner - of which Piers is soon to be a beneficiary.  Today’s NHS employs 1.3 million people and is Europe’s largest employer - and the World’s largest employer of highly qualified professionals.

Most of the time it succeeds in doing the greatest good for the greatest number.  And if I recall it correctly, that was Kier Hardie’s guiding principle.

I have my MRI late this afternoon.

Getting quite anxious.

Meds at 2:30.

🙁

Piers, I think this is one occasion when it’s OK to take a treatment lying down.

We all look forward to hearing what a great anticlimax it turned out to be!

On one infamous occasion Phil. On all other missions he was successful.

Sadly, History chooses the occasion which made the best headline. Bloody media!🤣

As Piers is now underway with his scan, hopefully encouraged by support from this forum, I feel I can comment on another aspect raised. The NHS has been the victim of its own success.  The cost has not just escalated due to advances in equipment but also in the scope of operations and procedures as well as use of prescribed drugs used increasingly as people advance in years.  This adds to cost  with some elderly bed blocking hospitals or needing more support at home.  Alzheimer's/Dementia is an example.  There has also been a need to train staff to operate more advanced equipment.

Having said that, we still lag behind some European countries both numerically in clinicians and various medical staff and with advanced equipment especially outside London and major hospitals.  I could give examples if anybody wished.

I agree with much of what you say, Barry.

My criticism of the NHS is mainly directed at many of the Civil Servants who administrate it, invariably with no medical training or even business experience, whose uninformed diktats often take precedence over clinical opinion to the detriment of patient care.

And I too could provide examples.  Indeed, most of us can!

my take on all this is quite simply that we in the UK have an unprecedented healthcare business in both numbers of employees, staff, both medical and all other skills. carpenters, plumbers, plasterers and all ............... in unprecedented numbers for any business anywhere in the world apart from I guess the Red Army

To understand how to cope with it all, let alone successfully manage it all must simply be impossible ..........  and I mean impossible ............ all and any administrators have an uphill struggle to cope as is noted by the wearing down of even the boss in charge, the Minister for Health from time-to-time

All these people do a phenomenal job and apart from the odd rogue that takes advantage that hopefully gets found out and prosecuted, hanged etc ......  I have nothing but praise for their usual dedication and care for the business they're all in ....  that's keeping all us old buggers going to enjoy our Lexuss' ......... may our cars last as long as some of us eh ! :yahoo:

I have to have an MRI this week - quite a long one.

Terrified.

I am getting some prescribed Diazepam to help.

Just thinking out loud really, as I know what a brilliantly supportive forum this is.

And best wishes to all who ever have any sort of difficult times in their lives or those close to them.

Hope this helps.

Hopefully by now Piers you have been scanned without too much distress and no doubt you have been told nothing regarding the results until they have been scrutinised by the radiologist.

When you do get the results I hope it is good news for you 😀

It is often the case now that a lot of ancillary work in UK hospitals is contracted out rather than done in house, just like a lot of UK companies have done, the company I previously worked for included. My local hospital has for example contracted out the meal service.

I don't know about Civil Servants outside hospitals but from observation of managers and clerical staff in the several NHS hospitals where I have been a patient, my impression is that they work very hard and many are overloaded.  This is an interesting link on the subject https://www.wbs.ac.uk/news/how-many-managers-does-the-uk-s-nhs-need/

With regard to nurses, the cost to the NHS is increased by employing Agency Nurses at higher rates to plug shortages.

GP's in the UK form a large proportion of our doctors but they each serve considerably more patients than in Germany or Italy for example.

I was so impressed with treatment I had in Heidelberg that I reported my experience to my second opinion in the UK.  He told me that he was not surprised as he had worked in German hospitals and was sometimes ashamed how some UK hospital compared.  Mind you he was working at the old Birmingham hospital at the time where conditions were poor, since replaced by a modern Queen Elizabeth hospital at Birmingham.  This is the way they do it in Heidelberg on a vast campus with many hospitals that specialize in different parts of the body, including a children's hospital, a women's hospital, the National Centre for Tumour Diseases, and the DKFZ German Research Centre .   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2cRYaIJXbvI

Well... I have had my MRI scan.

Feeling very spaced out still from the meds ( 4mg Lorezapam ).

( Having to correct almost every word I type.)

Yes, it was better than I thought, but that was no doubt due to...

Really good support from here and practical advice. Thank you so much.

Doing physical exercise in the morning.

Taking sedation ,took away the anxious feeling. Left me very wobbly afterwards,

Music to (attempt) to listen to.

An eye mask - a must; eyes closed.

Excellent and caring staff all the way.

Going in feet first.

Listening to all the odd MRI sounds and 'engaging' with them.

Having a chaperone - my wife.

Having a panic button - not used.

Took 45 minutes to scan.

And yes, told noththing about results as yet...

Good morning Piers and so you are now part of a select group, not only as a lexus owner but a MRI veteran 😎 Glad you agreed about the eye mask I couldn't have managed without, makes me full of admiration for submariners ☺️. And now, my friend, you can advise others in a similar situation, best wishes for a positive outcome. 👍
