red button to right of auto shift

Can someone tell me the purpose of the rectangular red button just in front and just to the right of the auto gearshift stick in a 1989 Celsior is please ?

Indeed - had it been a later model - that button would be the passenger injector seat...🙂

Shift lock override, pressing the button allows the gear selector to move without the key in the ignition and pressing the brake pedal, useful for recovery or when in a garage and car needs moving by pushing it.

Or even.......ejector seat!

And the button is to prevent 'premature ejections'.  😄
