Well, It had to come!

My 20 year old mark IV has to go. Needed to replace the Y section on the exhaust ,which I duly purchased.

The Garage got it up on the ramps and called me in.

Someone in the past had decided to weld the various sections of the exhaust together.

So, to get the exhast off would have meant going back to the manifold, Engine out, head off.

How much sez I?

How long is piece of string?

So engine has only done 118,000, had new belt and waterpump about 5k ago,Gear box in good nick.

Any good to anyone?

Had it for six years, Best car I have ever driven , won't see its like again.

Sad news but it has to come sometime.  I've just parted with what will be my last ever Lexus.  It was a good relationship, but time for a change!

How weird is that? Yesterday I sold my 2000 ls430 with 144300 miles on the clock and I'd had that for six and a half years. Not a bad result with that really, it means it only cost me £1000 for the whole time I've owned it! Very happy to say I've still got the "55" plate ls430 though.

Do you trust your garage prognosis ?

can't quite fathom how anyone could have possibly welded the exhaust to the actual manifold .....  without taking it all out in the first instance .....  and no-one would have done that eh !

wouldn't it be possible to dismantle the exhaust into chopped off sections if needs be and then the correct small fingered person with the right tools actually undo the exhaust at the manifold ..........  it can't surely have been welded into place there:unsure:

My indy assures me that my exhaust pipes are good to go truly for the life of the car, tank-like stainless steel he says.... and I'm 26 yrs young coming up and 233k miles

Sounds a bit extreme ?  Have you considered a Powerflow outlet to gave you a quote as there was quite a number of owners who had the "Y" pipe replaced for £250 or thereabouts.  They welded to the Cats and di a great job for me.

Engine out? bit drastic

I'd be very surprised if someone welded all of the exhaust. They might have welded the Y-pipe to the CATs but doing that in situ will be difficult.
Even if they are welded, chances are if they ground away the welds on the CAT to Y-pipe join they could separate them. Once that is off you can replace the rest of the exhaust.
I'd take it to an exhaust specialist. I used Pipecraft in Basildon and they are very good.

I cannot see how this is not repairable by a exhaust specialist.  No harm in getting one of them to have a look,  just search for specialists who can do bespoke tuned exhausts, they will (usually) know all there is about retro-fits in stainless to just about anything.

I would add  though that the chaps who did mine reckoned my exhaust was not stainless (when they put a stainless Y-piece in), but I think they must have thought it was not the sort of stainless they would use if they did a full rebuild.

At 209K, engine and exhaust as sweet as a nut.

Well, I got a Second Opinion, Powerflow Exhausts in Mitcham , South London.

Drove it there at 7.00 am in the morming, waking up the neighbourhood and setting off Car Alarms!

Awesome sound!

They took The Y section that I bought from LexusParts in Swindon and Did a bit of a " Cut and Shut" with some Exhaust tubes that they had, and stuck it through the MOT. £440.00 , Ta Very Much.

Her Indoors is happy again , as it is her daily driver to the Train Station.

I may now try and work on getting the paint work up to scratch.

It is now entirely possible that I will run out of places to buy Petrol ,before it wears out.

Thanks to HIzzoner The Mayor, It will cost me £13.50 to drive past the Sarf Circular!

If you get a "silly" quote, it is probably because they do not want to do it - or are not sure how to do it. Worth getting a second opinion if that is the case.
