Is this fixed with lubrication or a replacement problem? I assume it's a physical cable connection not an electronic control?

I doubt very much that there are any physical cables except maybe for the neutral switch and I don't even expect that, to be honest. It may be a big chunky lever but I think it's controlling electronics. I'll confirm for you later when I get chance.

Well, I'm amazed - turns out that there is a cable behind there after all.

Herbs, thank you for chasing this down. If the cable can't be accessed without all the work to remove the gear selector this might be a pricy problem.

The car is going in for a service and a check on this problem. Hopefully lubrication might be the answer. The problem is a little surprising since the car has only 66K on the clock. All servicing with main dealer.

Thanks again. A
