Can I safely remove this nut to replace it?

It is the coolant filler for the engine so you may get some coolant come out. Only do it if the engine is cold.

There is also a seal with the nut, as Colin correctly mentions little will escape with a cold engine as the thermostat will be fully closed and leaving the pressure cap on will also help minimise loss of coolant

Oh man I though it was just me and my OCD!!

I cheated though - I sprayed all my rusty looking nut heads in my engine bay and wheel arch with satin black

I assume you'll be straightening the oil filler cap when you've finished?
