noticed a big 12" crack in the centre of the screen Wednesday ..........  Saga the insurer asked how it happened ........... I surmised a stone ....  nope, don't know is the answer they tell me

OK so onward ...   give them the reg. and they tell me everything I know and don't know about the screen ...  would they like a photo of the bottom right hand corner showing the car make and many numbers etc .                No thank you, that's fine ...........

.............. we don't use main dealers or anyone to supply apart from Pilkington that make ALL our replacement windscreens

is that just news to me ?

Oh, the car is the Honda Legend btw, as rare as hens teeth nearly and couldn't see them having a replacement screen easily in stock ........  much rarer than the Ls400 for sure .....  but if Pilkington's are going to make one bespoke .....  so to the Saga nominated installer AutoWindscreens this coming Wednesday morning ......  YES SIR ........ we'll have it in stock by then for sure

Seamless thus far ....  let's see what Wednesday brings forth

all I had to do was to pay the £70/75 excess by card direct over the phone to AutoWindscreens

I always knew Pilkingtons made automotive glass; in fact, they're one of the biggest companies in the field.

Having said that though, when you look at the list of makes and models they can supply, Lexus isn't on that list.

Just a minor point Herbie old bean.

Glass does not grow in fields, it begins life in sand, ask Methuselah.

SAGA are my insurers and I had a replacement screen a few months back.

When calling SAGA's windscreen hotline I was transferred automatically to Nationwide Windscreens the recommended installers. They had to rearrange my fitting appointment 3 times as the screen wasn't delivered to their depot in time.

Speaking with the (reassuringly mature) fitter he said he's only done a couple RC screens and they always  have delays on the delivery as they have to come from Lexus. Obviously Lexus do not make the screens (he thought it was Asahi ? ) but the screen is all marked up just as the original one was.

The chap took his time and did a great job!

It has become slightly worrying lately that several members have been unable to source a replacement rear glass for the earlier LS400 models, I would hate to think mine could effectively be written off if some toe rag ever decided to put a brick through it!

to source a replacement rear glass

I'm reading this and remember when I first moved here to Queenborough in Kent in 2013

Pilkington owned, or at least bought the company that did, had a bespoke specialist classic car screen / glass making unit ..  been here for ever BUT recently moved to somewhere more central for Pilkington's ( I guess )

I went to the " factory " ........... small'ish workshop really and sought their advice on glass replacing the rusting steel sunroof on my Mazda 323f at that time .  it was possible but totally uneconomic.

I'd have thought this type of Glass emporiun still exists somewhere and maybe, just maybe, at some cost a rear screen could be manufactured bespoke too

Hope we never have to find out eh !

Hi I think you are right Herbie  I recently needed a replacement screen for my IS250c  ; Auto windscreens tried to find a non Lexus replacement but gave up  so I ended up with a genuine replacement and all genuine trims in Lexus boxes ,well pleased

As a slight aside from the main topic does anyone have experience with Glasweld? I have wiper scratches on my screen and was looking for ways to cosmetically improve looks. Thanks

If it’s a similar system to those windscreen repair kits for stone chip damage I’ve heard a few horror stories because once the stuff is applied if it goes TU it cannot be removed.

Pretty sure there are still specialists who can remove light scratches on glass.

Thanks and Glasweld are a franchised operation like chips away etc

Malc, what year Legend is that?

I had a devil of a job getting the screen replaced on my 98 Legend via my insurance / AutoGlass.
Ended up having to drive it to a specialist place in the middle of nowhere (who had a Honda OEM screen in stock) and leave it with them overnight.
They did a good job though and all I had to pay was my screen excess of £50. No idea what they billed the insurance company.

Legend

56 plate, 1st September 2006 .  just this second had a call from the fitter and it's all on target for me to leave home at 9.30am tomorrow morning

He will call me before 9.30am to confirm the new windscreen is with him when he gets to the office .............  the screens come in overnight

TBH I'm half expecting it to be delayed .......  these cars are so so rare that having one so readily available defies belief ( in my eyes anyway )
