The devil makes work for idle hands and all that...

Picking it up later this week. I know the Accords are popular on here. Any thoughts chaps?

I always liked them and thought of them as great value and quality cars... This in particular looks mint. The only sad thing about it is that Honda decided to ruin it and make it FWD. That has always been the main issue for me when it comes to all Hondas (well except NSX and S2000).

The pictures flatter it a little  A good 5 yarder I reckon.

Just shy of 130k. To be honest I've got my hands full with the Saab and I'm losing some storage but I just couldn't help it.

Just run in then.

I love Honda engines, bit thirsty on short journeys, frugal on long runs, but bullet proof.  My missus ran her Accord dry for a short while but the car still lasted until she hit a badger at 230K miles and decided to trade in.  I reckoned the car was worth maybe £100 tops, but the dealer gave me £300 and said, it's a Honda mate.

I bet that Accord is still out there somewhere, where as the X-Type replacement lasted only for 4 years (lovely free running 2 litre engine, blew at 120,000 as I recall), and the sills were more rust than you get on a 100 year old wheelbarrow

Apparently the weak point on these are the auto gearboxes. There was some sort of class action in the US and Honda had their wrists slapped. After cleaning the first job will be two or three drain and fills of the transmission fluid.

I suppose it’s no surprise that Honda owners turn up on a Lexus owners site. As the two marques that regularly topped the Owners’ Satisfaction Surveys, they would have a lot in common. I too came to Lexus via Honda.

However, I have a Romanian driving a Spanish Iveco truck to thank for that.

But my first Honda was a new Prelude in 1997. Over the years I kept thinking about replacing it, but could never find an alternative that attracted me enough. Eventually, after 15 years and 120K miles, it was coming up for its major service - and my wife was finding the big passenger door difficult to open – so I dealt it in for a new Accord 2.2i ES GT in 2011.

I thought this Accord would probably be the last car I bought – and it very nearly was. In November 2017, on the M25, the aforementioned Romanian, whom I’d already passed once, undertook and then dropped back to pull out into my lane. He hit the rear wheel, spinning the Accord in front of the truck and then pushing it along the M25 for about seven seconds like a new grill ornament.

Now such is the expertise on this site that I imagine many of you could sort it out with a bit of filler and a couple of spray cans. But unfortunately it was declared a write off. It was at that point that I discovered the Accord was no longer on sale in the UK, as I would have ordered a replacement the next day.

So it was purely by chance that I strolled into the local Lexus dealer, knowing nothing about the range at all.

Incidentally, although the Iveco driver admitted responsibility he stated, via Allianze, that I had driven into his ’blind spot’, which gave his insurers the opportunity to question the claim. Fortunately I was able to extract the files from my dashcam that clearly showed, first, my overtaking the Iveco, he clearly then undertaking my car, before dropping back to pull out.

Once presented with the videos, the claim was settled in full within days. Which is why I think everyone should have a dashcam!

That was a really good read Len, thanks for that.

You were indeed both fortunate to escape unharmed physically and to expose the deceitful driver in the manner in which you were able.

Your advice re Dashcams is gratefully received by all, I am sure.

Thank you, John.  And you are absolutely correct.  The Accord ended up in front of the Iveco, straddling the lane and projecting out into the adjacent lanes on either side.  So either end of the car could have been hit by the still fast moving motorway traffic.

We were also fortunate that the Accord stayed in the lane and didn’t spin out     to hit the centre divide and involve other vehicles.

Speaking of dashcams, when I got out and confronted the Iveco driver, I pointed to his cab and said “Dashcam?”  He replied “No dashcam.”  I thought what are the chances of that- to be hit by possibly the only HGV driver not to have a dashcam!

One other annoyance was that two days earlier I had had fitted a new set of Michelin CrossClimates.  My insurers wouldn’t take that cost into additional consideration as they maintained it was simply part of my maintenance responsibility as an owner.

One puzzling aspect is that none of the airbags deployed.  This may have been because the initial violent spin reduced the final impact?

Changing lanes is, apparently, the most common cause of incidents involving lhd trucks on UK motorways.

Hopefully the drive back to Sheffield after I've picked up my Accord will be uneventful!

Usual Honda issue is rust, under the airfilter, rear arches, around the boot and seals. I was a Honda nut before moving onto Lexus and they're fantastic cars. I've always liked this shape Accord, although at the time they never sported the engines I wanted (B16, B18 or H22). We have a lot this shape around town as we have a few American air bases locally and this was the most popular shape Accord Stateside so they'd be imported all the time.

Good luck with the purchase.

Noted. Thank you.

The drive back was (luckily) uneventful! Making comparisons with Lexus, the engine at 130k miles feels extremely tight with virtually seamless shifts of the auto gearbox. Interior trim quality certainly isn't up there with Lexus. Maybe comparable with Toyota? I don't know. But like other Japanese brands not a squeak or a rattle anywhere.

First job is to give it a damn good clean. The previous owner was the racing driver Mark Hales, clearly more interested in driving than cleaning which is no bad thing as the car is in excellent mechanical condition and was serviced recently and subject to a complete suspension refresh. I'll probably do a few gearbox drain and fills as it's a bit of a weak spot and I'll consider a timing belt change as there's no history of one being done.

That's about it really. Apart from telling Freda who owns that red car outside the house...

@LenTI had that model of Accord too, the I-DTEC EX. It was a fabulous and much under rated car, apart from by those who actually owned them. At the time I was home based and doing 20k miles a year to various offices mainly in the North and Midlands. When I changed jobs, with a much reduced mileage, I reluctantly decided to change it as I was afraid of dpf problems. That was 2015, and Honda didn’t have any new 2.4 petrols left due to the discontinuation of the model and I moved to a petrol CR-V. That was a good car, but I never loved it as I’d loved the Accord...so I made the switch to Lexus.

Honda are a fabulous brand, I’ve always seen then as a cut above Toyota tbh, especially in terms of interior quality.

Well I gave it a bit of a wash. I've a feeling someone had gone over it with some of that coloured polish  Have to say, driving it I'm very much reminded of my IS300.

Interior is where the work is but that'll have to wait until Sunday. The youngest wants gerbils...

Well the original shots looked pretty clean and it can only get better!  Like Lexus reds, the Accord really responded to deep, dramatic colours.

My Prelude was probably the same red and it always scrubbed up pretty well.

However, like most reds I suspect, it was rather vulnerable to sun-fade over the years. Which became a slight problem if any respraying was called for!

Wow lucky there Len. You've made me think now about a dashcam. There has been a few LHD lorries side swiping I'm always wary when having to pass these.

Apparently Brent it’s the most common cause of motorway accidents involving LHD trucks.  Obviously your dashcam isn’t going to stop them changing lanes, but if you survive it the aftermath becomes a lot easier - especially if the evidence shows you were blameless.  And of course if you’re a victim of such as the so-called ‘Cash for Crash’ scam, it not only exonerates you but also provides evidence for a prosecution.

Incidentally, if you look at the Accord you can see the rubber marks from the impact of his front offside wheel as it was turned to the right and hit the rear wheel arch,  spinning the car round!

One word of caution, however.  You have to remember that the camera is not JUST recording what OTHER drivers are doing...!
