Can someone please give me advice on cleaning an egr valve on a 07 220d.

1. Do I need to disconnect the Battery?

2. Are there codes required after refitting?

i should say that there are no lights on the dashboard

many thanks

Hi Stephen,

No, you don't need to disconnect or remove the Battery and no codes required after refitting.

You simply unbolt, clean and refit.

A couple of things to note:

  1. To make things easier, you can move the top tube (the one from the EGR to the cylinder head) out of the way rather than removing it.  You will find it quite difficult to get to the bottom bolt on the head without removing the Battery, but if you remove the top bolt, you can just loosen the bottom one without much difficulty and move the tube up and to one side.
  2. Be care not to damage the gaskets on the valve as they are reusable.  They are pretty thick though, so this shouldn't be an problem.
  3. Remember to clean the top of the intake manifold as well as it will be quite dirty.
  4. If you haven't cleaned the EGR valve in a long time, it is worth separating the two sections with the 3 hex bolts to be able to clean the valve seats by pushing the valve open.

Pretty straightforward really and shouldn't take too long.  Also, if it hasn't been cleaned for a while then the car should feel much better afterwards. 🙂

Let us know how it goes.

A much simpler way is to use PCD's fuel system conditioner. It's a non combustible cleaning agent that is simply added to the correct fuel level in the tank and drive it for approx 80miles til empty. It also cleans the DPF & prevents water entering the fuel it works unbelievably well. Recently a friend saved himself a packet when his Jags dpf clogged and had it booked in for a clean. He cancelled that appointment for a cost of £30 instead. I've had the same success with it also.

Thanks to all for your responses, problems keep coming, erg was fine but then engine started chubbing took it to local mechanic to have injector seals replaced, he tells me it not a straightforward but has agreed to replace them this week. Fingers crossed this will work.
