The infotainment system is very different to the US. We have no concierge service or remote connectivity (no in-built Internet connectivity).

It is a breach of the Highway Code, Rule 123, to leave a parked vehicle unattended with the engine running or to leave a vehicle engine running unnecessarily whilst that vehicle is stationary on a public road.

Imagine the complications!

I did once own one of the first PHEV, a v60 estate that had preheaters, the car had a diesel type generator, but it was very quiet! Similar to that of an Auxiliary Power Unit used on aircraft.

But... in theory you can do it on your drive way, because driveway is private land and thus highway code does not apply.

Funny you should say that. I said that to a traffic cop once and he said that so long as a drive way is NOT secured with a gate or other perimeter which does not allow for any vehicle to pass onto it freely, then it is classed as part of the 'public road' and road traffic rules apply.

Still to this day do not know whether I believe him or not.

Areas where the public have access but that isn't technically a public road still have road laws applied. The main example here is a supermarket road system/car park which is private property.

Your own private property that isn't secured but where the public shouldn't be I'd say is a grey area and would probably need a court to decide if the police wanted to press charges, but I'd make the argument that SORN is allowed on a driveway without it being secured, no tax or insurance is then needed, so road laws shouldn't apply either.

I would say that cop was wrong, but don't take advice from me, I am not lawyer, nor I am providing legal advice. 

To simplify my statement - on private land highway code does not apply. What is or isn't private land that is another question.

Finally, police more often than not either does not know the laws or knows them and does not follow them. If you let them abuse the laws they will do, but I do not advise gambling with them as courts are very partial as well - unless you have clear cut case you will be in immediate disadvantage. So everyone needs to decide for themselves if it is worth it.
