Has anyone put the FTC fuel tablets into the petrol tank? Is there a gauze filter at the bottom of the fuel filler where it meets the fuel tank. Have used the fuel tablets in my previous cars / motorcycles, as they save fuel and enhances the engine performance.

Placebo effect is strong. Is there any evidence to support these claims other than people thinking they made a difference?

The people peddling that stuff must be printing money, it's amazing what people will believe without stopping to think. Toyota spend MILLIONS on R&D getting their fuel economy up and their emissions down as low as possible. There's a reason they don't put stuff like this in the tank from the factory - doesn't do anything.

Sorry Bernard but the phrase 'snake oil' comes to mind.

If you really want to save fuel and make things better engine-wise, convert to running on LPG. By far the cleanest mainstream fuel, much better for the engine, better for the environment and better for the wallet.

Can that be done on a hybrid? I looked into doing mine (non-hybrid) but found some scary stuff about toyota engines and valve seat recession which put me off.

It can be done and some people have indeed done it, but I have to admit I wouldn't be brave enough. The hybrid is such a complex beast anyway, why tempt fate by adding another layer of complexity into the mix?

I remember when lead was removed from petrol.  A number of products were submitted to an official research centre claiming to boost octane and or alter the fuel proving better combustion etc. The result was all failed except for a couple where a liquid incorporating lead substitute and octane boost was added at each fill to provide the cushioning of lead for some classic cars previously run on high octane leaded fuel.

I'm a big believer in not putting anything into your car that the manufacturer didn't explicitly recommend. I always tell my garage not to use their "flush" products when changing the oil or the coolant. If those things were necessary they'd have been specified by the manufacturer.
