Fake parts.... a problem?

Having changed my pulleys and belt on my celsior last year I am starting to get a little squealing on start up which I thought was a little too soon and as it is time for an oil change  I would see about both jobs ( I would like to wait for 20 degrees mind you).

Youtube's analytics seem to have read my mind and showed me this video in my feed.... what do you guys think?

That video is very informative and a good indicator of the state of the world, you just cannot trust anybody .

I think this video has been mentioned here before - I have stopped buying branded parts from eBay for this reason.

Best to pay a little more and by from dealer for piece of mind

Toyota and some dealers have a presence on ebay - it's who you are purchasing from that is important, not the platform you use.

amazon is the same - look who the seller is.

Couldn’t agree more - been burned too many times with utter garbage from eBay and some of the other ‘low cost’ Auto parts websites.

I now go main dealer unless it’s a proven aftermarket alternative.

Eye opening video and personally I think it should be pasted in every subsection of the forum so as many folk as possible can see it and make them think before they buy.

I have to disagree, unless it's a part that only Lexus can provide.

We have a couple of motor factors here in Preston who supply parts to the trade, Far cheaper than main dealer but a supply chain that can be traced and you know you're getting good quality components.

Both of them have been in business for decades - if they were supplying dodgy stuff they wouldn't have built up such good reputations.

Unfortunately they don't have a website but they are very helpful on the phone.

Well, the other one I was thinking of was Andrew Page, but while just looking for contact details I've just discovered that AP has been bought out be EuroCarParts.

We do have other motor factors around here but Dodgsons and Andrew Page are/were the two I dealt with most.

Another thing you have to watch out for is companies with really great products and really great reputations being bought out and then the new owner gouging as much profit as possible out of the reputation by cutting costs and quality. Perhaps this isn't so common in the UK and Europe but I frequently hear about that kind of thing happening in the US.

Unfortunately it's not just car parts these days, nearly everything is copied and counterfeited. Even buying direct from amazon isn't always safe, there are numerous reports of fake products making their way into their direct (not 3rd party) supply chains.

Spot on - I’m in the middle of a mustang restoration and Scott Drake (big in the US) is very much going that way!
