Hello and thanks in advance to everyone

Ive got a ct200h 61 plate which has done almost 220k

Its been running great till last month when ive noticed a stutter / juddering when i take off from a standstill, sometines can be when i start the car in the morning from cold, or sometimes when ive been driving for over half an hour and take off from the lights from standstill.

I notice it more when i take off smoothly, its intermittent so hard to replicate on demand. It seems to be noticable when taking off smoothly

Has anyone experienced similar problems?

Hi,

Have the plugs been changed?  The service interval for plugs is 60,000m, which they seem to do without much wear, but they are often overlooked completely!

Carbon/gunge build-up on the back of the throttle valve is easily fixed, and can give similar symptoms to yours.

I think it's quite rare, but moisture can get between a coil-on-plug ignition coil and the spark plug itself.  The coil has to come off to check, so worth combining with the plug check/change.

This one is a bigger problem (below):  given the mileage, if it hasn't been done already then it could be this, but there is usually quite a lot of clattery noise associated with this problem as it's happening.  There are other posts about this EGR topic.  If this one is allowed to carry on, then the head gasket can eventually fail on account of the extra loads this places on it.

Thanks for replying Boosh

The spark plugs were changed in the last service about 6 months ago

I forgot to mention that when in idle, the car does occasionally seem to shake a loud clattering sound occurring.

The car is always in parked mode when this happens and than it settles down after about 30 seconds.

The rev counter remains at 0 when this happens

No lights on the dash have ever appeared when these problems occur. I thought it may be because its something thats loose as used to be the problem with the heat guard before i had it secured. I meant to have this checked out than this juddering from take off ive noticed

I guess my fear is the worst that the occasional judder that happens at take off from stationary is a potential gearbox problem.

Thanks again in advance

Thanks  royoftherovers

This was the first time ive bought a hybrid and can't fault the car genreally

Im glad to hear that gear box failures are rare on the ct200h, or transmission as i should call it perhaps, as its not a normal gearbox

I spoke to the dealers but naturally as the problem cant be replicated on demand they were not able to assist, unless i leave it with them for continuous diagnostic, which would cost several hundreds of pounds by the time the fault was replicated perhaps

Searching more on this topic and reading others experiences which seem to be rare in this problem, I'm just thinking would a transmission oil change be worth it, i can't seem to see if it was done (if such a change needs to be done)

Let`s hope that Mods join in to comment.

I have stated on this Forum probably 3 times that no problems have been reported on Gearbox/Transmissions with Toyota/Lexus Hybrids and I`ve not been corrected. However, yours is on 220k plus, so I suppose that there always has to be a first time.

As some consolation however Adam, my Merc is on 247,000 miles on its 5 speed auto transmission without problems, so you should not worry too much.

Ask your dealer to tell you how many defective Hybrid Transmission THEY have they fixed.

Can you confirm if the petrol engine is running when this happens?

@ColinBarber

Yes it is when its in petrol

I don't even bother to really use the EV mode  and just keep it set to ECO mode on the dial

95% of my usage is on the motorway

@royoftherovers

Appreciate the reply

There are not many independent hybrid service specialist that i can find

Before i hand it to the dealership for diagnostic and risk the bill, i thought I'd see if anyone had experienced similar juddering at take off

I have just realised there are a couple of recalls on the car one to do with an airbag and the other to do with the fuel, however i doubt this would cause this juddering

So the shudder is coming from the petrol engine, and is running at the time and not trying to be started?

I'm certain the petrol engine is running

When taking off I'm not aggressive but not too slow either I'd say, just a normal smooth take off

As i love from the lights perhaps a few yards later the juddering can be felt. It only lasts a few seconds and than as i move past about 10MPH  and to 30MPH or 70 on the motorway, it can't be felt againt

It reoccurs occasionally after coming to a standstill

I'd say in the past week i travel 40 miles returb to work 5 times a week and I've felt it on 3 occasions

Sometimes at the beginning of the journey, sometimes at the end

I'd suggest that if you are at lights that the petrol engine has been turned off by the hybrid system, and you pull away under electrical power only. Then a second or two later the petrol engine starts and this is the judder.

My initial thoughts would be a blocked EGR valve which can cause starting issues and probably at least semi-blocked on an engine which has done 220k miles.

also check the engine mounts haven't worn/split which can cause engine shake when it starts.

Thank you ill ask them to have a look at EGR when i send it in for the recalls, and the engine mount

If it turns out thats the worst than thats good, as i said before it is a good car

True not the most fun but for commuting to and from work its good on fuel and confortbale full of nice little features

Appreciate the replies and comments
