I sometimes play the "If I wanted to buy...." game. It is sort of the inverse of searching for a car on AutoTrader!

Find another car you fancy ........ then consider how much you would get for your present car as a Trade-in.

Ask yourself this question: "If I wanted to buy .... the car I have now for the price of the Trade-in, would I buy it?" I have found the answer always seems to be YES!

That makes me satisfied with the car I already own!

WARNING: It does not work every time!

@Flytvr great shout on the W8, I've only ever seen 1 in the flesh, parked up at Wolverhampton train station a couple years back. Cool left field choice IMO.

Thanks @4969_LXS. Definitely. Always loved them. Sound great as well.

I would imagine they drink fuel however 😞

I used to be a big VW fan. I've owned..... 6 Golfs (GTi 16v x 2, VR6 x 2, 4 Motion and R32 MK5) and 3 Passats.

Posted

@Flytvr They do sound great, it's a unique 8 cylinder sound too. From what I've seen on the web they do like a drink.

Also only 275hp from 4 litres, comes across as a rather inefficient lump turning fuel into work. At roughly 68-69hp per litre 🤔

On a VW note, I do quite like my friends Golf Edition 30, I've still got my 1.4 Polo as the daily. As it was my first car, I can't bring myself to part with it.

Carrying on with the thread, I've been searching around since the thread began and I find it very difficult to place a car that could replace my ISF, other than the Stinger or a GSF, saloon for saloon, whilst retaining reliability and quality merits. The only minor downsides for me with the ISF are the road tax and fixed rear seats. But it's a super saloon with a bucket load of character, which no modern car has anymore. The Stinger I suggested would have similar performance and would fix the road tax and fixed rear seat downsides. But just not the same soul. It's hard to describe and I know it's cliché but there's something special about an N/A motor, and for me the ISF itself, I think it has the right blend of everything. If I had the two at the same time, I'd find myself smiling more when I picked up the ISF keys than the Stinger's. 😈

I dont think £50 a month on tax is much of an issue when you get to drive a really nice 5.0 v8 around. I was paying the same on my Mk5 r32 and felt the same with that, the noise alone was worth it. I tried the more modern turbocharged smaller displacement thing, fast yes, excited to jump in it and fire it up, not really. That was £20 a month to tax, so for £30 a month more i get a 5.0 v8. Good old man maths!

Posted

Hi @scott-o yeah It's not bad when you consider people pay more than that a month for a phone. Only thing I'm considering, when some V8 cars registered on the new tax rules (2017 onwards) turn 5-6years old (e.g Mustang, some GSF's and the usual German stuff). The road tax drops to only £140ish. If a Saving of £430 can be taken for a car with the same merits and character, it's worth it IMO, other costs depending. Also It's more money for me, and not the tax man's pocket.

Wish they have the mark x grmn here. V6 with a manual gear box and spacious enough like the gs..

Original 90's NSX, Oh how I wish I had 30k a few years ago, I'd have been laughing financially. Stunning car.

Really like the Civic Type R Sportline, I'm a sucker for Japanese reliability.

Toyota have hit it out the park with the new Yaris GR it seems.

If work situation doesn't change I might have to hand mine back and downgrade significantly, I honestly like the new Mazda 3, cracking looking imho

If I can hold on to her, a LC would be my next move in 4 or 5 years.

Only elec car I like is the Taycan, if you are forced to spend over £50k, may aswell go for a full fat option.

Just jumping on this thread rather than starting a new one.

Due to covid, my job has taken a real hammering and is quite possibly set to get worse over the next few months. I'm potentially looking to downgrade, as my RCF is too hard to justify right now.

I'm 11 months off the 50% point of my HP, however given what they are advertised for on autotrader, I might not have much negative equity to clear, so a part ex might be possible.

My question is, part ex value wise, the free guide figures have varied from £22k 🤮🤬 to £24750, which imho is still low.

I don't have a settlement figure yet, but its probably around £26k.

I know damn well they would put her up for sale for between £29k -£31k using the others available as a guide.

I'm concerned that most dealers are going to try and fleece me, as it is such a niche car.

Any thoughts?

Cheers

I had a friend in a similar position a few years back, he openly admitted the finance in his listing and sold the vehicle privately with the new owner pay the purchase price off the finance company and he paid the last part off himself on the same call, new owner got email confirmation that the vehicle was free from finance.......possibly a better option 🤷🏼‍♂️

I've just done something similar with my Abarth 695 Biposto Record (could say more of a niche car), had a browse on autotrader and realised the values hadn't budged from when I purchased the car. Asked for a settlement figure from finance company and it was about £3-6k less than asking prices on autotrader.

Covid has reduced my income but could still manage to run all the cars, however, bit of a no brainer in these circumstances, stop paying £££ per month and possibly make money on the sale... I ended up speaking to a private local dealer, I was upfront and stated the settlement and what they went for on autotrader. We had some very friendly discussions and he bought it from me and I ended up 'breaking even' in terms of the finance. Had the car for one year and he bought it back from me at the price I originally purchased it at, so tax, insurance and fuel for the year only 💪

I guess it all depends on the dealer, he was open to discussion and was honest about what he needed to make on the car and receptive to the fact I wanted to at least break even on the car. I'd also say my situation is probably more favourable than yours in terms of I didn't need to get rid of the car, it was just a happy coincidence, but I went in with all the facts and ended up with a deal I was happy with. Ask around and discuss your situation and see what the results yield!

Given yours is a 2016 car and not 2015 I would have thought a dealer would advertise it at £33/4K,assuming the condition is good and the mileage not too high.

Could be an idea just to have a chat with a dealer, but obviously with this type of car you need the right one.

In your part of the world there is Parkway Specialist Cars at Mansfield, have a look at their website, their stock profile matches the RC F (I think they have an LC 500 at the moment).

The owner,Mark Teale,is a decent enough guy to deal with,so worth a try.

Thanks for the advice 🙂

She's in great condition, wanted for nothing obviously. Just a few stone chips, unfortunately even ceramic coat can't stop those. Below average miles at just under 39k and full main dealer history.

Quick silver exhaust and a couple of genuine carbon fibre interior upgrades, but I will probably return to factory and make those available for sale on here.

Truly a great car, but unfortunately the world has changed and as a couple, we spend too much on our cars. Looking into doing the same thing with my wife's.

I'll call lexus finance tomorrow and go from there.

If they put it up for £33/34k, its more than I paid 😅

Also as a bonus, the settlement quotes are usually valid for around a month, so you have a little while to negotiate/ shop around 🙂

There is a local dealer who trades in high end stuff. I'm going to give him a shout. He did up and sold my brothers car and he's a straight up guy.

I think I can get a reasonable new car and save myself £300-400 a month.

Shame the GT-86 is meant to be unrefined on the motorway.

A civic type r is going to be too expensive, APR deal aint great on them.

Our good sister Toyota is offering some lovely 0% finance deals, I am trying to get a GR Yaris in the near future, just seeing what happens post lockdown 2.0 and currently shoving money down the throat of a newly acquired LS400... haha!

You can get some cracking nearly new deals also! Be interested in the end result 🙂

What a cracking car the GR Yaris is. Future classic i feel.

Just been running some insurance quotes. A type r is half the price of the RCF, that amazed me. I prefer the sport line (without the rear spoiler) but monthly costs are high.

I simply won't be able to put a deposit together, unless I get lucky selling her.

I'm open minded, would possibly prefer a lease, the new Volvo S60 is a nice looking car and in a great spec would be almost £300 a month cheaper on a 3 year lease.

Most of the nearly news seem to sting you on the APR.

If anyone sees anything that might be of interest, please feel free to scream it out.

I want an engaging drivers car that is comfortable on the motorway.

I want to avoid instantly regretting the sale and then be stuck for 3 years.

Sometimes they are unbeatable value for money!

Would also partially agree on the % with used cars but sometimes manufacturers do have end of month/ year/ season sales with low APR's for used car to clear stock. I tend to stick with manufacturers that own their own finance departments, rather than being underwritten by somebody, not to toot Lexus' horn but they did modify the APR % on both my F and the Mrs NX to get it within our monthly payment goals, so always worth an ask! Also if you can buy something still in waranty for low money it can be worth checking out loans instead of dealer finances, %'s tend to be kinder and you pay it back like a finance package anyway 🙂

Dont let this stop you, 6 of 6 cars we've had on finance have had 0 of the Queens pounds put down as deposits - obviously it does bump up the monthly payments, but I'm a salesmans worst nightmare for negotiating 😛

Oh I love the hunt. My starting point is knowing more about the car than the dealer (easy to do) and then they are out of their comfort zones 😄

I'm thinking of either max bang for the buck, or sensible refinement.

1. Civic type R (Honda reliability and great gearbox / driving dynamics)

2. Merc A35 similar perf and nice looking interior.

3. GT86, good looking car, driver focused, but worried about motorway refinement.

4. Mazda 3, great looking hatch, quality interior, mazda reliability and cracking manual box.

5. Volvo S60 T5 r design plus. Great all rounder.

Not overly keen on audi / BMW, Golf R and GTi just don't do anything for me.

All ideas welcome.

Spend my life on autotrader (unsure if sad or what level of sad that is, haha).

Haven't been interested in Honda, other than the classics for years unfortunately, but would get the Honda E as a run around!

Wouldn't buy a Merc (personal preference)

GT86, drove one on a track day, can't comment about refinement as it was never driven sensibly haha

Very much looking forward to the next gen of Mazda from a 'something alternative' point of view, but haven't owned or driven any.

Volvo S60's are lovely, can't stretch to the T8? 😉

My wife has an XC60 T5, great car, but again the monthly is just too high right now.

She really fancies the Mazda 3 and I can't blame her.

I'm not a Merc fan boy, but the A35 is the only thing I can think of comparing to the type r.

I've sat in a Gt86 and I was impressed to be fair, but I drive from Nottingham to London every week and I'm not sure it ticks that box. It would financially be a great deal however.

Maybe i should just use the train more and get it anyway 😄

I've never had a Honda, the things I'd do for a NSX 🤤

I have changed cars a lot (too much) over the last few years and here are some opinions which may or may not make a difference because at the end of the day the choice of a car, especially a sporty one is often a personal rather than a logical choice.

I would say a GT86 is liveable with at 70/80 on the motorway...not the quietest obviously but better than the 981 Cayman I had.

To me ( and a lot of others) the main problem with the GT86 is the engine. In reality they don’t make 200hp,usually about 180 but even worse they have   a torque drop off between 2500 and 4500rpm so they only feel lively between 5000 and 7000.This can be sorted for about £1500 (new exhaust manifold which deletes one of the cats and a remap) but that’s if you are into modding cars, which I wasn’t.

The Civic type R FK 8 is a brilliant car but after a year I felt ( at my advanced age I could no longer live with the looks.

I think the Yaris GR is in danger of being over hyped.£30k or over and there aren’t going to be any discounts... but budget interior and probably not very relaxing as a daily driver. There is an alternative at not much more than half the price...a lightly used Fiesta ST3,not as good but real value for money IMO.

Anyway, just my opinions, but you buy a sporty car with your heart and not your head 😀

Thanks for the feedback.

The GT86 appears very good value, I'd need to take it out on a motorway test run.

I think I'm still young enough to get away with the Civic, but a new one is working out the same monthly price as my RCF. Low mileage used would be the only option, but I'd be worried it had been ragged already. Really don't want the huge spoiler (personal taste).

The Yaris ain't for me, but im delighted Toyota built it.

Whatever i get (if I can sort out the sale) will be a compromise.

Insurance due in Jan and £350 ish is far more tempting than £800 😬

I was the same about BMW so avoided them for 35 years. Seriously you won't get better bang for your buck at the price level. Do a back to back between a six pot 240i and a GT86 and there's no comparison, notwithstanding Toyota are now sticking that same BMW engine in the Supra. That said I respect your opinion and I still feel the same way about Audi.

ps...how much for the F ? Its actually a decent time to sell, used prices are strong everywhere.
