I am needing a new exhaust for the LS430.  When people have had the custom made ones from the likes of Tony Banks, have they also had the Y section replaced?

Does the Y section contain the cats, so I would have to buy new cats too?

Anyone had the lot including the Y section replaced that can give me rough costs please?

Also, can anyone recommend anyone nearer to the North East than Leeds?

Many thanks.

There's a company at   5 Algernon Ind Est opposite Boundary Mills,   Powerflow  The Exhaust Doctor Shiremoor NE270NB.  0191 2037320.  I've never used them and have no connection. Let us know how you get on.  Jim  Washington

Y section? Do you mean where it splits to the rear silencers either side?

Yes, thats the part.  It has a hole where they split.

The “cats” are before the Y section so most replacements are termed “cat back” so join at the cat flanges, the only problem is the flanges on the cats tend to rot resulting in exhaust blows at that point. I understand some companies weld the new system directly onto the cats but then you would have issues if the converters ever needed to be replaced.

What he said ^^

I had effectively a cat back on the GS at Tony Banks and it was about £600 iirc. Lovely job, I'd speak to him. Tyne and Wear to Leeds is just a trip down the A1  You sit in McDonalds round the corner for an hour or so and job done.

On the 430 there are two Y-sections.
The front Y connects to the headers/primary CATs and joins the two banks before feeding the exhaust into the secondary CAT (circled).
The rear Y takes the exhaust from the secondary CAT and splits it feeding into 2 resonators (circled) and then into the 2 back boxes and out to the 4 exhaust tips.
Mine had a split in the flange where the front Y joined the left primary CAT resulting in the code for a "failing" left bank CAT.
My exhaust specialist made a new Y pipe but retained the secondary CAT. Cost £150, no more codes and sounds stock.

Probably has to be a cat to meet EU standards but there are 2 types one with and  the other with just a silencer box.

I'm intrigued. What is there to go amiss with the Cats ?

I watched my indy drop one Cat from my front exhaust area ( I thought ) , it was quite " holey " at one end, re-welded the outer rusted thru areas and walah ! all good to go yet again, maybe another 25 years😲

The coating on the ceramic honeycomb in the CAT does wear away over time but should be good for at least 25 years. Enough has worn away over the years that they are considering "harvesting" the top layer of tarmac from roads because they now have a higher concentration of Platinum, Rhodium, and other CAT metals than the ore that they dig out of the ground to get the original material. 🤣
The most common causes of the codes on the LS430 are due to cracks in the Y-pipe letting air in which changes the readings in the 2nd Lambda sensor that is just downstream from the CAT-Y-pipe connection. The error codes (P0420, P0430) say that the CAT has failed, but in fact the sensor is really reporting more Oxygen in the exhaust than it measured at the 1st Lambda sensor when there should be substantially less.

Popping through here tomorrow, so will see what they say.  So long as they are not hundreds more than Leeds, I will probably give them a try.

Well that didnt go as planned.  Cost was no where near the same as Leeds.  about £800 for a 'sporty' one, and around a grand for one close to standard.  The bloke was lovely, but too much for me.

I have been getting itchy feet lately, so thinking now might be the time to move on.  I have had a hankering for an SC430 for a while now (bloke who had my car before me had a SC before that, and I always loved that car).  Anyone had one, as comfy to drive as the LS, as roomy in the front?

I've always thought that the SC430 is like marmite - you, either love it, or...........

I'm an  'or..........'  😕
