A very good friend is thinking of picking up a new (old) car. It's for sale over here but originally from the Isle of Man, brought over here about 7 or 8 weeks ago. It still has IoM plates on, the seller (trade) is waiting for the V5 from the DVLA who I assume will issue a suitable age related plate. The car has a current MOT, carried out since it landed on the mainland.

So, questions. Can this car be driven over here on the Manx plates? What about tax? Obviously the car is untaxed here because currently there's no V5. And insurance. Probably temporary for now but how do you go about insuring something that currently has a plate no one recognises?

Anyone?

I think that may answer the question, ie, you don't.

you

You mean my very good friend surely?

Phone call to the DVLA and also shopping around various temp insurance sites plus speaking to a broker, we have an answer of sorts.

It appears a vehicle reg isn't required for insurance but it's a moot point because the car can't be driven on UK roads until the V5 is received. Tax will have been paid by the seller when he first contacted the DVLA and obviously tax isn't transferable.

So there we are. Clear as mud.
