Hi 

I've just booked in my 450H 2011 model for its first Major service after buying it used from Lexus Sidcup a year ago. 

I went to the local Woodford dealership and they sent me a link with the Service progress just now and I was shocked to see that so far there are 5 Red "Immediate Attention" works to be done costing over £3K. It appears to be all for wheel suspensions that need replacing or repair. I have only done about 5K miles in the past year. It has currently 103k miles on it

I have the extended 3 year warranty and the 2 year service plan. 

Will I have to pay to get this done or should it be under the 12 month used car warranty?

I'm confused, you say you have an extended 3-year warranty but then ask if it's covered under the 12-month used car warranty?

In any case, if the warranty doesn't cover repairs then I'm not sure what the point of it would be! If it was a Lexus warranty I'd assume it would cover suspension parts. The typical used car warranties you get from random car dealers are often worthless insurance products that only cover something actually breaking in a way that wouldn't be deemed normal wear and tear. Hopefully (and I would assume) the Lexus warranties aren't like that and actually cover things like this. But presumably you'd have been advised of what the warranty covers when you took it out, do you have any documentation that came with it?

Sorry I'm fairly new to this. 

When I purchased the car last year it came with the standard 12 month warranty but they had an offer of £995 for 2 years extra. So in total I should have 3 years. 

My question is, if they suspensions appear to be worn out that badly should it not be covered as the car is still within 12 months?

To me, the 12 months and 3 years are the same...

Not sure the misc., items are needed...?

Ask if the 'Reds' will be done under warranty.

Lexus often go a bit OTT with 'suggestions'.

Hi Ben.

If you bought the car under one year ago,I would expect the warranty given by Sidcup to be that which should cover your problems. Take up the matters identified by Woodford immediately.Perhaps Woodford can contact them on your behalf?

If more than one year ago I would expect the Official Lexus Extended Warranty to address the problems, so inform Woodford that you have the Extended Warranty Cover.This covers you for 2 years from the date Sidcup`s cover expires, for mechanical and electrical problems (so long as you have not caused them).

Keep us all posted as to how you get on .

The guy ( assumption!) on the workshop floor wielding the spanners and identifying anything & everything that is not in a tip top condition on you car has got no idea if you have any warranty or not and who is gonna be paying be pay for it, he is just doing his job and looking out for his mate in the parts dept!

These 'immediate attention' areas....have they been advisories on a mot previously? I guess not by your surprise!

When you get near the end of the warranty period, say a month before it ends, take the car to an independent Lexus specialist and ask them to do a "pre-warranty-expiration" inspection, ask them to be thorough even if it means an hour or two's labour. Well worth it if they find anything that's about to fail. Then take the report to Lexus and have them fix it all.

I just had a call from Lexus Woodford and they have said that the 5 Red suspension issues will need addressing. I explained that the car is barely a year old and bought from the Sidcup dealership and they say they will try and put it through warranty and will call me back to confirm. 

They also said the Mot has passed but will have ' notes' about the suspension issues. 

If I can't claim through the warranty should I just take the car back without carrying out the repairs and contact Sidcup since I bought it from them? 

Woodford mentioned they are just a 'Franchise' so I don't know what limitations they have compared to the Sidcup dealer. 

This has ruined my day.

Not sure why a franchise is relevant...

I would wait on the warranty question first... to see if the work will be done under warranty.

I am not surprised that you are having a bad day Ben. Let`s try and look at matters rationally.

All Lexus Dealerships are franchises and they do not all belong to the same Franchise. Woodford is part of the Hills Group and Sidcup is part of the Jemca Group.They will not always be best friends either with you or with themselves.

If the car has passed its M.O.T. do not expect the Extended Warranty Claim to be approved as the car has not been assessed as requiring attention to make it roadworthy.

It appears to me that Woodford have identified problems which they say are Red items and yet have provided a full M.O.T. They are trying to increase their revenue by pressuring you in my opinion as otherwise why would they have issued an M.O.T Certificate?

Receive your car back from Woodford, pay the Bill and then contact Sidcup and explain what has happened and ask if they will consider addressing matters on your behalf under their 12 month warranty which they issued to you upon your purchase.

I'm not sure I like the sound of these Lexus extended warranties. You pay a big chunk of money up front and then have to ask please sir would you mind terribly fixing my car under warranty?

Thanks. I'm still awaiting their call. 

I've got the Essential Service Plan which I have been paying monthly so that will cover today's Mot and Major Service. 

I only went to Woodford as its local to me where as Sidcup is 20 miles away.

I have had great value from mine, but occasionally needed to 'encourage' its use.

Appreciated, I didn't mean to offend anyone so apologies if I sounded rude. It just sounded odd that the warranty issue wasn't an immediate thing that was always used without question. You are indeed correct that I've never had an extended warranty!

They are still waiting for the Warranty team to come back to them and will update me by 3pm today. If it is covered by warranty, they will need to order the parts which won't come in until Friday so I will probably need to pick up the car as they have completed the Mot and service. 

They also gave me a courtesy car today so most likely I will need to return that today if I can't keep it for the next 2 days.

Update 

Woodford called back and confirmed the suspension is covered by the warranty (phew!) but the parts are not available until later this month. So I will need to go back in on another day for that. 

Once they do repair /replace the parts, do I need to redo the passed Mot again so that the suspension faults are cleared from the notes?

Also the other issue that came up Red was wheel alignment which they quoted £144. Shall I get this done at a independent garage or will this invalidate the warranty?

Alignment is necessary because of the suspension work so they should cover that under warranty too. No point doing it before the suspension work or it’ll just need to be done again.

Good news.

I don't think MOT 'notes' ever get cleared. But it should mean that next MOT will be a good one.

If suspension is getting 'fixed', perhaps wheel alignment is a good thing?

You could probably get it cheaper elsewhere, but is it worth the hassle of going somewhere else?

No point, just keep the paperwork that shows it was addressed. MOT history is never re-written, it’ll just mean you have another new MOT with no advisories.

Good news Ben, so your Bad Day is turning out ok, now.

You do not need to take the M.O.T until next year.The notes that have been made are only advisory.

I would expect the wheel alignment to be covered by the Extended Warranty,but do not bank on it. You must read the Extended Warranty document for clarification on that one.The warranty document will always override the views of Members of the Forum.

Also re: the alignment, I would consider that part of the job of doing the suspension work. To do just the suspension and not align it afterwards would be nuts, I can’t see a Lexus dealer doing that. The car may not drive straight, might chew unevenly through tyres and could even be outright dangerous. Pretty sure they’ll do the alignment with the suspension work.
