Gearbox oil extraction

2002 LS430, 80,000 mile service. Using this suction extractor, £28.49 p when I bought it. It does suck well.

I got 2.1 litres of old gearbox AFT out. I then replaced it with 2.1 litres of new Toyota type-IV via the small dipstick hole. What is interesting is the oil condition after 80,000 miles. On the dipstick it actually says 'not necessary to replace under normal conditions'. Two samples, old and new oil colour. The old was dark reddish in colour but smelt OK, and smelt just of oil! The new is pink/cherry red.

I would love to drain it all and the torque converter as on my old Mercedes E class. Oil for life is crazy. It must deteriorate. I'll do it again next service as i have 2.9 litres left. Can't say the gearbox change is any different as it changes in perceptively anyway.

Tried it on the power-steering reservoir but could only get about .25 of a litre out. Replaced with Dextron 111. Any other way of easily getting more out?

Use a turkey baster or a big syringe put the same in as you take out four or five times until the fluid goes pink or as near to pink as it will go run the engine and turn the wheel after every dose.

To remove more from the transmission you can disconnect the oil cooler pipe at the radiator, start the engine for some to pump out (0.5 litre), stop and refill and repeat until the fluid coming out is clean.

But you can just do what you did every couple of years to keep it in good condition.

 

At the age the vehicle is, you may want to consider dropping the pan and replacing the filter.

The colours were the same when I did mine.

Although for the earlier model this may help if you want to flush the system, filter change is also on the same website.

My ATF fully replaced when car was at 140K, was a dirty brown and smelt like toast and fish (odd), took it to Auto Transmission specialist for full clean including getting it all out of torque convertor.  Only cost me about £50 more than having a garage do a slight drain and replace a couple of litres.

So 70k miles later, ATF is starting to go brown, and umming about whether the do a full replace or not, but does not smell like previously.

Did exactly the same not messing about dropping all over time do it in one hit by dropping pan and replacing/ cleaning filter I paid 180 all in at an auto gearbox Place

Yup I have tried both methods. Another thing I discovered was that is you lift up the front for a while and wait. (Do not know for how long. Mine were up for weeks for winter sevice) You get much more out 3+ liters or so . I just get 1.6 l or so If I drain on flat ground fast. At 140k and dark oil I would try to get mostly new oil in without much delay.
