I never "top off" my fuel when filling up as I know it can damage the charcoal canister. I just went to fill up and used the opposite side of the pump from where my filler cap is, which I've done many times before without issue. This time for whatever reason after the pump clicked off there was a gush of petrol spraying out of the filler cap onto the floor.

So now I'm paranoid about having damaged the charcoal canister =/ Is that likely to have happened?

Does the RX 300 have a charcoal canister?

I'm not aware I do, though may be wrong!

 That's interesting, I was under the impression that only diesels had a charcoal canister.  I wonder what recommendations are to replace this part.

I was blissfully enjoying my perceived charcoal-free car. Topped the tank up a bit after filling up earlier. Then out of curiosity googled the issue of them and was informed that all petrol cars after 1980 tend to have one. Then checked toylexparts again and found I do have one. Hope I haven't nuked it!

The part itself doesn't seem expensive (£135 ish), guessing it's the labour involved if you need to replace it that gets expensive.

I'm not sure you do have one.

I think the previous model did, but yours and mine are > 2003.

Mine does according to that link I posted. It shows the canister for 2006-2008 ACU30 which is what mine is.

Yours I think is probably an MCU35R? That seems to have one too: http://europe.toylexparts.com/lexus/521220/mcu35r-awagkw/235w/002/3/7701/771281e

I have a theory that many common recommendations like this don't apply so often to toyota/lexus because they've been better engineered from the start. An example of this is the common lore about not running the fuel tank too empty for fear of damaging the pump. I've heard from experienced mechanics that they don't tend to see this on toyotas much.

Of course it could just be pure luck - I'll be avoiding overfilling in future!

There are floats that stop fuel getting to the canister so you shouldn't have too much to worry about.

The pump is in the tank with a filter in front on most Toyota's so no dirt can get to the pump or fuel system. Not that it is a big problem these days anyway. Fuel is better, stored so there is less moisture than in the past and the vehicle tanks are treated, plated or plastic so rust isn't a problem.
