Hi guys im looking for help and advice. My 2004 facelift LS has got and rear wheel bearing on the way out.I've bought the hub assembly from eBay for my local garage to fit.

He has told me this evening that he cant do the job and I need a complete rear hub assembly as the worn part cant be removed easy and would cause damage to other parts.

1) Has anyone changed a rear bearing ?

2) What is the complete rear hub assmebly ?

£3) Anyone know if i would be able to get this second hand or anyone breaking a late 430?

Thanks in advance Andy

Not sure if I can be of any help.  Bit puzzled by what you say. First you mention you've bought a new Hub Assembly but have got a wheel bearing thats failing.

I recently had a N/Side "Bush" which is in the Hub, fail or almost fail on my LS400.  Not an easy job to remove but my mechanic did remove it after I provided him with two lengths of Scaffolding pipe and a Socket for his Removal Bar.

If  (and this is deeply qualified) the below part is what you need replaced (on the rear hub)   then IT MAY  ????  be that these two pieces of Pipe plus  a puller kit ( might) just do the trick in removing the Bush and replacing with new.  I don't know if diameters etc will be the same.

My mechanic did not have the right puller kit, and so I improvised a 27mm - CR-V Socket by grinding out the inside slightly so it fitted on the Bush after temporarily removing the Rubber protector. There is a right side and a wrong side to do this as the bush has a slight shape for inserting, one side.

This may be your Hub ????         https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FOR-LEXUS-GS300-GS400-GS430-REAR-ARM-WHEEL-HUB-CARRIER-STUB-KNUCKLE-ROSE-BUSH/200889421052?_trkparms=ispr%3D1&hash=item2ec5f14cfc:g:OfAAAMXQrC9ScNpa&amdata=enc%3DAQAFAAACcBaobrjLl8XobRIiIML1V4Imu%252Fn%252BzU5L90Z278x5ickkrmmq8hWevtuKE7%252F%252BLfVXtiZnhuLN5MjZRhyNJvN8T8Z5Mwu1Z13kcwGwy5rq%252FhCazv%252Fj%252B0bjbpFUSkaEv7MzhNzsnIYY7TcTKTstKV%252FxVoyM%252B0SyHhfTtlJfHElHXcMvCl3qASHUKi5BTIS8%252FGQ%252BF1W%252Fs2dCwCcIjAgXTPyYq5w2oPpeyVVqLnbPgZ8cXp407yurts2YdlNW8QHiW9QXOQrdlAWCI99rWQCcsva53rkI3gAKyNuEpUuSzfCho3E4CAzMje6z0qkcYLKyc6JKygl3dHurtdqkdUdAY4cJQaC4akq7IN%252FVcT33uhCditL2WRkpM3IQ%252BQbsRwAGbLXvPqZW1o3VnZmyHkflQNuspemHIJJ20sjmqF4kSr%252FuLWwsKQCA6lKb3gUFGvYQdzzaGkCkI3PB33Y7v%252FtHwlNRocpKL%252FxsmGk3lTEDthOqtFTv9GboeUhNmZzffKSjCRY27J6wCRbUD2HxN2Fp%252BdCoz%252FGuvvOOldFr6XmPnU2JMi76MSUw67nyn5gLP9nKWGwj9txVLZ%252BrEty%252BdGXpCHINs%252Bk977LocQ1ghIMzVTKVgJb7RAnVUXnH5MTV8rzVKHDI%252FEXf7pVRdEgf1hCn531fY29wR4thOPQ%252B%252FdLA5eYvyUwkPfpAkviE3WInh7Alb7VMCxbo5HnW2y%252F4dOa5sc7G0PtFBV36H3KS2UEv9WFjKtJuknPHavJy2vXGesZNJ6NvznajnBDYMkqvaygWSON1LRrqwjJXvjypM6acST6Dl3FZ%252FdG%252Bwa9QtNcYpbiMpxWLhA%253D%253D%26cksum%3D200889421052c0c05a91a67b45acb31b0923c3618712%26ampid%3DPL_CLK%26clp%3D2334524

and this is the set for the 27mm socket. Fits snugly - to my bush.

If ?? your mechanic thinks with the Scaf tube - one piece one inch to extract and the other four inches to insert (approx) then let me know by no later than Friday and I can send them to you at cost, subject to their return. PM me. Weight is heavy.

I had no joy getting a removal kit for the Bush but you may find one available for your vehicle?

Personally I would find another mechanic, OK not an easy job but do able with the correct tools which a professional mechanic should have.

You take a risk with secondhand hubs....they may also be worn so more labour costs if so.

This is the procedure if you want to pass it to your mechanic

Maybe Steve I've got confused as to the part needing replacement?

Pig of a job the Bush. Even with the tools to hand Mechanic had to heat the Hub with a blow torch to get the bush to shift.

If I'm on the right track Andy (???) then you may want to also look at this thread where Ambermarine has posted photo's.

If not, please let me know by reply as I have a tight schedule with holiday on the Horizon. Yippee!

I recently Changed  my rear hub on my 2005 celsior.

I had purchased a puller for the job,,,, so thought it would be no problem.

After trying the puller... which did not work at all in fact it split the bearing in half (some ranting and swearing at this point), so I bought a 12 ton workshop press and waited 2 days with my car on axle stands for the thing to arrive, in the meantime I took the hub carrier thingy off.

The Press arrived after rummaging around I used a socket to try and press the bearing out..... it did not move not even a little bit.

So at this point I used a 2 pound hammer and invoked the gods and it just fell out, I then cleaned it and pressed the new one in which went in very easy.

I also had to replace my near side rear hub assembly a few years back o/a bearing.

I imported a pair (thinking I might need both sides done) from USA and my local garage charged just 2 hours labour to fit near side - I sold the extra hub shortly thereafter and got most of my money back.

The only problem was the mechanic didn't tighten the drive shaft allen key bolts with enough torque and they came undone, middle/end of the 3 connected by a joint washer and when it threw out it daamaged one of the rear AC pipes in a place that could not be repaired easily.

Make sure the same doesn't happen to you as the bolts/washers are circa £50 and it took an age to get them. In the end I had to blank off my rear AC.
