Leaking Tyre Valve?

Hi all

Just had tyres refurbished and a set of new tyres fitted.

Have then given the car a clean.

I heard a hissing noise around one tyre when cleaning and thought little of it.

Just taken it for a drive and the TPMS low pressure alert came on, on the dashboard.

Got out the car, and went to the tyre I heard the hissing from and it's still there. On closer inspection, I can see water bubbling around the valve.

A quick Google LED me to the video below, but it doesn't.

I've also seen an article about tightening the stem too.

But all the videos and images I've seen don't look like the valves on mine, and I wonder if something is different for ours.

Any advice appreciated!

Had a leaky valve stem once just after getting a tyre fitted - took it back and they just pulled on the valve with some grips to make it fully seat - never had another problem with it.

Does the valve have a nut on the outside?

Mine had a leak from where the TPMS sensor was, so the fitter got a socket out and tightened it a bit.  Been fine since then.

If no joy there is a such thing as a TPMS rebuild kit which comprises of new gasket.

Went around with a 10mm socket and tightened them up a bit. Will soon see if it's sorted!

Still leaking even after tightening!

Looks like I need one of those kits @Andrew888

A quick YouTube search shows I need to take the tyres off to do this job. What a shame. They've only just been put on. A trip back to the tyre place!

Unless there's anything else to try before taking such drastic action?

let the refurber's know about the issue if you buy the repair kit they should

take the tyre off and replace the seals foc

The kits aren't expensive really, but if I should be buying 4 and having them replaced on all 4 corners, it seems excessive cost for what it is. £7 per kit plus postage from Lexus Parts Direct.

Or is proactively replacing all 4 overkill? Should just doing the 1 be OK?

This valve must have been leaking before anyway. Although it's on the other side wheel of the same axle since the refurb job. I had always assumed a very slow leak due to tyre, but I'm guessing it's this that's been the problem all along.

i doubt the valve was leaking before generally "o" rings / seals are a one time only

use as when they've been used they will of been compressed to the profile

of the 2 sealing surfaces if the "o" ring / seal doesnt go back in the exact

orientation it was originally fitted there will be a risk it wont provide an air tight seal

Thanks Mark. In which case, would you recommend anytime you have the TPMS off the rim that the seals are replaced then?

I'd like to have thought a alloy refurb centre would know that and it'd be standard to replace them.

Should I now be having all 4 corners fitted with new o rings?!

i would change the seals each time you have the tpms sensor swapped or changed

for the cost of the seal against the problems you could have with flat tyres

its definately worth it

if you have a valve repair kit i would take a new seal to a seal company like

as they will be able to match up the original seal at a fraction of the cost or the repair kit

so you can have some spares

To be honest if the others aren't leaking I wouldn't mess with them. Why fix something that isnt broken right? However need to address the leaky one with the seal kit. Its very hit and miss when taking off tyre valves and reusing (like metal ones) sometimes you get away with it sealing again (like you have with the 3) and unlucky on the 4th. thats my 2p anyway

Hi Matt

I would double check with them to be honest. So many part numbers, so many revisions! gives you an idea on cost anyway!
