Hi guys,

Recently just bought a 2008 IS250 and love it, I would like to look after it well. It has, so far been serviced every year. All Lexus until 2014 and then an independent. The main things that have been done so far are:

- spark plugs in 2015 at 43k

- the invoice says aux belt, is that the same as ancillary belt? (Sorry, bordering on clueless...) was changed at 58K

The car is currently on 86200 and driving nicely. So I was going to get the spark plugs done again at around 100k, would it be a good idea to change the water pump and belt at this time (is this belt different to the belt that has already been changed?)?

The manual also says that the ancillary belt needs to be changed every year/10k miles after the 60k change, this seems a bit much no? Do people stick to that?

The other question I have is, is it worth getting the transmission oil changed, I know it is “sealed for life” but I guess that depends on your definition of life. If I get it changed, I have been reading that it needs to be done with quite specific oil and carefully. Best to let Lexus main dealer do it or could any mechanic do it?

Really chuffed with this car so want to look after it but not very experienced! Any advice appreciated! Also any recommendations of mechanics etc in Devon would be great! Thanks.

Does it have air con?

Is it cold etc...?

I'd be surprised if the water pump hasn't been done already as they have about 10 years in them before they go, if not it probably wont be long until you hear it if it's not been done. They are a fixed price at Lexus and it's worth going there to get it done. To my knowledge you get new coolant added at the same time.

Spark plugs to be honest I wouldnt bother with they will be fine and it's a big expense to get them done.

I would however look at the brake calipers on these as they are a known issue and seize up. The slide pins need regular greasing and Lexus dont do it. Simple to do yourself though or a trusted mechanic.

You should get many more miles of motoring out of it they are fantastic cars.

Had my spark plugs done, but ONLY because the engine had to be opened up anyway.

Had them changed on my beloved Soarer at about 100k. They were still as clean as a very clean clean thing.

Spark plugs are due at 60K, so about 100k for you, but as Piers said they are actually probably perfectly OK - they should last 80-100K miles..

The ancillary belt/auxiliary belt/water pump belt are all the same thing. They last for ever (almost) and certainly don't need doing every year. Changing the belt is one of the easiest jobs ever on a car. Takes 5 minutes once you've got the trim panels off.

Good idea to change the water pump - no reason why it should have been done, although they do fail at your sort of age/mileage - I sold my 2006 IS250 last autumn at similar mileage to yours - it was on it's original pump.

Good idea to change the transmission oil - get a dealer or an auto transmission specialist to do it..

I'd agree that the most important job right now is the brake caliper sliders - don't get a dealer to do them - they'll want to sell you new calipers.

May well be worth getting the aircon recharged - plenty of specialists in aircon will do the job..

Enjoy the car - you'll get hooked on Lexus - I am!

+1 on all of the above as this car is pretty good at keeping itself together so to speak!

Check out the videos on YouTube for the caliper pin greasing as it is not super technical but if unsure then any Indy garage worth its salt should be able to do it with their eyes closed, just check they ain't using Copper Grease!

As for the water pump, yes they don't last for ever but changing one out that ain't faulty doesn't sit right with me, when they do start to fail there is usually a tell-tell staining of pink ( from the coolant) under the shaft area on the aluminium casing, so if you check around here on a regular basis you will spot a failing pump early before it fails catastrophically.

one maintainance job that can be done very easily is the MAF sensor cleaning, check that also on the toob!

My water pump wasn't leaking, but I thought I heard a rattle from it at idle so bought a BluePrint branded one which turned out to be the genuine article with the Toyota logo ground off.

I took the old one off and sure enough the bearings were on their way out as you could move the drive spindle about quite a bit. Put the replacement on and all is quiet again. It's not a difficult job to do and there are enough detailed Youtube videos to show you how. My mileage at the time was about 62K. I think I paid about £78 for it as the seller offered some sort of discount. Came with new O ring seals and the metalised gasket.

I asked LEXUS dealer in Leicester 3 times for this and never had any replay.

Escalating your concerns up the lexus chain might be an appropriate step W ?

Apologises for hijacking.  Lexus Leicester not replying or giving information which is not correct is the reason why I don’t use them for my cars. Although Lexus Leicester is my “local centre” I use Lexus Coventry, the service and friendliness of staff is excellent.

As long as the correct iridium plugs were used I'd agree. If not then they would need changing sooner.

I changed mine at 95K and they looked like new. Replaced with iridium so should be good for another 90+K miles
