This was working intermittently but I had to repeatedly push the button until it lit up, it has now stopped working. I realise I will have to remove stereo and probably remove the a/c panel with the switches on from the stereo block. But how accesible is the switch when this has been done and can it be replaced? I am hoping to get at the innards and try spraying some Deoxit 5 on it and see if that fixes it. Thanks in advance.

Coincidentally I have just removed the entire Climate Control (CC) and Audio unit from my car and I have just posted a How To Tutorial about the procedure, which should be same for your 1997 model.

The front of the CC unit just unclips from the main body and there is a PCB which also appears to unclip. Presumably once that is detached access can be gained to the switches and LCD screen.

If contact cleaner doesn't work then I suspect you need to be handy with a soldering iron.

I have taken electric window switches apart (on SAABs) and they often have burnt/pitted contacts, like old ignition points. I bit of fine wet and dry and once shinny, they work again. If the switch can be opened up, be careful, as springs and bits often fly off. The satisfaction of cleaning the contacts and having it all work smoothly again is amazing.

My old climate control unit could be a source of spares for you, if necessary, although I don't think the AC button works, and the screen is shot.

Let me know by PM if you're interested.

Thanks for all the help and kind offers. I got the Climate Control unit off and took it apart, sprayed some Deoxit in there and plugged it back in and it works perfectly!
