Disk and pad replacement IS250

Hi all,

ive just been quoted just under £850 for disk and pad replacement in my 2012 IS250. Seems a bit steep. 
 

Halfords wanted less however, I thought I’d ask to see how much you had paid in the past. I don’t really have the time to do it myself.

I think I would find the time to get it done for £600 less! Besides knowing it was actually done properly to say the least! If they have an inkling that you haven't got time to do it yourself then the price might even go up!

To be honest I would actually want to do it myself for the reason above and as we know the Caliper pins need regular greasing to keep the seizing at bay but don't expect this to be done unless specified or requested ( even then if caliper do stick in near future can you dis/prove it was indeed done?

To be honest i would find the time to do it myself - £850 is a rip off. £200 to £250 for the parts and about an hour or so job to do. £600 saving and its an easy job. Failing that and you dont have the time then i woudl imagine it woudl cost around £300 from an idie if you supplied parts

blimey! I paid my local mechanic to do it as I was having back issues at the time. he did it infront of me and in about 20 mins. cant remember how much I paid but it was £100 labour, I supplied the parts

I always like to think that Lexus would take care of their customers. I understand they are in the business to make money but can’t help feeling like they are taking the mic with this one. I’m going to try an indie on Friday to see what they say. 
 

I know everyone is saying do it yourself, my other fear is messing it up and not having anyone to turn to in the event of me not being able to do something e.g push the piston back in the callipers.

I would second replacing the brakes yourself and save a fortune. No special tools required, just basic spannering.
Touching something like the brakes on a car can be intimidating if you have little to no previous experience, but it is a very straightforward process.

Pushing the piston back can usually be done with your bare hands. Just remove brake fluid reservoir cap, place the new pad in position and push against it. Failing that, you can buy a specialist tool for £10-15 to do it.

Even if you have no tools whatsoever and have to go out buy a 100pcs socket set from Halfords to do the job, you'll still not spend anywhere near £850.

If you'd still prefer not to attempt to DIY, by all means buy the parts yourself and have a local garage fit them for you. Again, even if you buy genuine Lexus discs & pads, it'll cost nowhere near £850.

Here is a write up I did when replacing my discs and pads on a 2010 model. It's honestly not that awkward. 

At the end of the day...it's up to you of course... but this will give you an idea of the work involved.

If it can wait a bit, hang on until Spring when it's all a bit warmer.

Or, see what a good local independent fitter quotes you.

No denying the above 'How to' is a excellent one but please, please do not work near/under a 1.6 tonne car on the jack alone. If it's Hydraulic then your hand/foot damage/loss is relying on a tiny rubber 'o' ring or if OEM then the nylon bush in the screw mechanism! Always try to use something solid ie Wood/concrete block or better still axle stand to support the car but leave jack in place.

As for 'pushing back' the caliper pistons then I use one of these. Inexpensive and works a treat.

Did you check the Essential Care pricing at a Lexus dealer? The prices for servicing and these sort of maintenance jobs are online - see: https://www.lexus.co.uk/owners/servicing-and-maintenance/lexus-essential-care/ - just select your model. For the IS250 it is £295 for front brake pads & discs and £275 for rear brake pads & discs - so £570 all in for all four wheels. I had the front brake pads & discs changed recently on my 2014 IS300h at a Lexus dealer and paid £325.

So...Why did Lexus quote him £850 then, was it because he might have mentioned not having the time to do it his self? But if it is out there on their own site how can they come up with a higher price? Incredulous!

Search me... Lexus dealers are supposed to follow a national pricing for service and maintenance and that's why the prices are on the website - always worth a look there for cars that can take advantage of the Essentials service and maintenance as the prices IMO are reasonable (as far as similar car brand dealer prices go). I had mine on a service plan and when it was eligible for Essentials service plan the dealer moved me onto that without me even asking when I wanted to extend it for another two years.

Thank you for the replies. I have taken it to an independent garage who said that I have a few more miles left in them yet. As others have mentioned, I have looked online at Lexus essential servicing and saw that the prices were around £550 ish but I still couldn't fathom why they were another £300 on top. I guess I'll see what happens in a few months time. The local indi said it shouldn't cost anywhere near the prices quoted... here's to hoping!

Tip for pushing piston back is to do it with a flat head screwdriver BEFORE removing the old brakes.

Using the inspection hole on the caliper, slot your screwdriver in between the disc and the INNER pad and lever the piston back in side. Screw a wheel nut back on to secure the disc.

Do this with the reservoir cap removed and ONLY if you are replacing both discs and pads and obv screwdriver will damage the parts.

Have used this method on many cars....

I'm in North Cardiff. Pop it down and I'll do it in front of you for half of that or better still show you how to do it yourself and supply jacks and stands if you pay for lunch at the Caerphilly Mountain cafe when we test drive it afterwards.

 

I have a set of caliper wind back tools already, and red brake grease and wet and dry papaer toclean up the sliders if needed and ... well you get the picture.
