Paint care with protection pack

Hi all.

Collecting my new NX this week and planning ahead. I have paid £620 for the paint and wheel protection pack and think the cleaning chemicals that my local £6 hand wash peeps use will ruin it.

Question is. Can I use my current collection of Poorboys waxes and shampoo with carnauba wax or do I need synthetic stuff?

Just purchased a pressure washer and snow foam adaptor. Which snow foam is safe to use with the Lexus protection treatment?

If it's the latest Lexus protect stuff, actually it's GEN3 glass coat, the GEN3 website specifically says not to use waxes or polishes. Their Glasscoat wash solution works really well if somewhat uninspiring, absolutely no suds at all ..

They say the coating is safe with "well maintained" car washes.

It's been a few months of ownership now and I realise the lexus protection paint pack is not as I thought it would be. So off I went to my local detailer and after one week I have a full Ceramic coat and It looks awesome. Highly recommend.

Was done in Coventry and Cost about £900. Worth every penny.

I had mine fully detailed and a 5 year ceramic coating put on for €210 with wheels and leather done as well so far far cheaper than a dealer. As with any coating it needs to be looked after so it would be best to read up on what they suggest. I would say though certainly no going to those hand car washes any more as they will use the very harsh chemicals to get the car clean.

Hi Darrin.

I Invested in a karcher, two buckets and a load of products recommended by my detailer, even bought a hot air blower to dry the awkward bits. Only takes three hours to wash and dry now. Wife not happy. No more public car hand washes any more.

I used to play that game, but age and a lack of free time sent me to the hand car wash (exterior only) . I then detail the outside with chemical guys products and clean the inside. 

I used to be really into car preparation. In the 90's I fully restored a Morris Minor saloon. 

Due to lack of use I sold it in 2006 to a family who showed it. In 2018 it came 2nd in the 70th Morris Minor Birthday Rally concours, so it was great to see that my efforts Al those years ago were worth it.. The lad who has it now runs The Austin Allegro Club.... Sadly I must admit to buying one new in 1976 😂

^^ Me too @olliesgrandad. I used to show Mini/MINIs but it all got a little bit obsessive and just took too much time. As I've got older and less mobile, I still love getting my car looking good but want to spend less time doing so. My only remaining MINI - owned from new and dry use only in the 16 years I've had it - only needs a wash once or twice a year, and I'll admit I do 'go to town' on that still, not that it ever needs much to be better than new.

My second NX had a professionally applied gTechniq ceramic coat and full correction (fair to say pre-delivery washing wasn't done very well by the dealer!) a few days after collection, and it's fantastic - I'm a convert. In the almost two years since the only maintenance has been snow foam, wash, and c2v3 every so often to top up the finish. It's brilliant. Best £500 I ever spent on a car.

I'd avoid 'coatings' of any sort applied by the dealer. My first NX had the Williams one thrown in for free, and it just wasn't done very well - it will have been a lack of proper preparation most likely. Unless the dealer brings in a specialist, you are better off having it done yourself by somebody recommended imho.

I’ve had various versions of the paint and trim treatments over the years.  Autoglym LifeShine is the only one I’d pay for again, though Mercedes Supaguard was good too.  You can usually get it for about half the usual asking price.  We had my wife’s new SEAT Arona done for £199 last year. 

If I was buying new, as opposed to leasing again, I’d go to a specialist detailer for something, rather than let the apprentice mechanic do it in their lunch break!

^^ Agree. There may be some exceptions but I'd always recommend going to a professional rather than letting the garage do it. A colleague has a new BMW which allegedly has a coating applied. It doesn't bead - at all! No doubt either nothing has been done, or it's been done very badly without correction beforehand too. He paid £450, and wants to know why my NX looks so different...which is simple,, it's because mine was done by a pro and fully corrected first.

Gave it a Spring clean yesterday, and although I spent quite a while doing it, it was actually very easy to bring it up like new. I do look after my car though, no bomb-site hand washing cowboys allowed!
