I bought an Approved Used RX400h last July from a Lexus dealer. It had 130k on the clock but came with 12 months Lexus warranty which I extended by a further 2 years. The service record was all stamped up but no details of what was done at each service. On delivery the 130k service was stamped on the right side of the booklet over the watermarked ‘full service’.

As it’s due a service and MOT next month I thought I would have a look at the Lexus web site and see what was available for the older vehicle. I also registered and found the on-line history.

As an approved used vehicle I was expected the history to be precise, so the cambelt good until 200k and the spark plugs to 180k. Not so, the cambelt and water pump was change at 126K so a bit of a bonus, ok till 226k. The plugs however were changed at 80k so now need doing next month at 140k. This I believe is an expensive service item which I thought I could budget for at 180K. The 130k service was not a full one so not only the plugs need changing it also needs a full service!!

Do you think I have any re-dress with the supplying dealer for at least a discount on the spark plug change. If they won’t budge can I have them done (at lower cost) by an independent Lexus specialist?

Any comments welcome.

 Thanks

Dave

Services are time-based as well as mileage, e.g. 10k miles or one year, whichever is soonest. My car had its 50k service with 39k on the clock because it had reached 5 years old and was about £225.

In October I think it is, it'll be due its 60k/6-year service even though it won't have done 50k. This is a 'spark plug' one and will be about £570 because of it.

Watched a couple of videos on this.  Replacement of the plugs  in the rear bank is quite involved due to need to remove parts for access. Getting the job done by an independent mechanic who has done this before would reduce overall time and labour.  Worth investigating unless you can cut a deal with Lexus dealer you bought car from.

Do remember that you bought a car via lexus and you bought extended warranty with Lexus so it might invalidate your warranty. Try buying a service plan with Lexus it may be £50 to £60 cheaper than doing it pay as you service. We have a service plan and got a discount of £100 over the 3 years compared with pay as you service. Furthermore if it’s a service due within the month ask Lexus to service it for you as free of cost. Our cars were serviced and Mot’d for free as it was within the 3 month period of buying the car.

Don't forget if you are a gold member here Lexus some Lexus dealers will give you a discount on all servicing and repairs. When it comes to a big service this is a lot of money. Don't get the plugs done elsewhere as you have the extended warranty which is one of the best available.

If you bought the car Dave, at 130k on the clock, how were you able to get an extended warranty for a further 2 years,

when the maximum mileage permitted by the Lexus warranty is 130k ?

Its not against the warranty rules to have work done at another garage, but it is against the law if the issuer of the warranty tries to void it due to work being done elsewhere. Of cours it needs to be proper garage and not "John down the road"

Derek,It will be contrary to Lexus Warranty Conditions to have your LEXUS SERVICED OTHER THAN AT A LEXUS DEALERSHIP.

I'd recommend that you get a quote from your dealer and go from there. Lexus offers discounted services for all cars over 5 years old.

You're correct with respect to the manufacturer's original warranty from new, but when the car drops out of that and the owner buys an extended warranty then they can stipulate any rules they like.

Don't take any notice of the mileages as they got them wrong, but below is the actual paperwork I received from Lexus Teeside:

Me thinks then Herbie that Lexus Stockport were taking the mick. Mind you 570 after the discount you got seems very fair considering what needs to be done and time taken.
