Latest update: -

My brother came round and his meter recorded 6.4 Amps, so we used his portable Battery pack to give the Battery enough juice to start the car - so it WAS a faulty Battery.  That's where the fun started.

1. I went down to my local Halfords (to make use of my 15% discount) and they checked the Battery and it was at 11.1 Amps, but they refused to fit a new Battery because the car is a Hybrid!!

2. I called the local car parts store and they said they have never heard of this bt they did not have the correct Battery in stock

3. I called the nearest Toyota garage and they said it was rubbish what Halfords had said as it was a nomal 12v Battery replacement.

4. I called Kwik-Fit who agreed with Halfords but they have a 'Hybrid Specialist' who could fit the new Battery, but he was off sick!!

5. I eventually managed to get thru to Lexus Glasgow and the Service Manager advised me that Halfords and Kwik-Fit are talking nonsense and it is a straight replacement for my 12v       Battery.

I took the car back down to my brother and he checked the Battery again, this time it was at 7.8, so it looks like his ancient BT Battery meter is gubbed!  I've borrowed his mobile charger/jump starter in case of any further problems but it looks like I need a new Battery before the onset of winter.

Since getting the car going again there have been some electrical faults: -

a) the automatic door lock did not work at firts, but this is now working again

b) the steering wheel did not come out to meet me at first and had to be adjusted using the small pad, again it now wworks

c) the passenger and rear windows do not work from the driver's door panel, this is still the case.

I would love to hear your views on all of the above.......

Crumbs what a run around you've been through, all because folks are fearful of Hybrid's.  Although better to safe than sorry I suppose.

At this point I wouldn't worry about the odd electronics, the cars are reliant on a solid power source and yours is appears to be far from that at the moment.

Get a replacement Battery ordered and fitted ASAP.

Exactly as Lee says above - get a new Battery and it'll be sorted.

There's nothing special or difficult about changing the 12V Battery so just do it yourself. I haven't got a 400h but I would imagine all you need is a 10mm spanner or socket to undo the + and -  post clamps and something to undo any clamp or bracket securing the Battery in place, then it's old Battery out, new one in and Robert is your mother's brother - simples!

EDIT - you may be getting your Amps and Volts mixed up. Below is a chart of Battery voltages just for your info:

He seemed to do an awful lot of tapping.  Is that because some of his taps didn't work, or is it necessary to make all those taps in that sequence?

It's necessary to do all those taps. Might take a few tries.

  • 2 weeks later...

Just get a Battery from your local Toyota dealer for a MR2 roadster! They are the same Battery but a lot cheaper ! I should know as I had both cars and replaced both batteries within a few weeks of each other and the Lexus one was £25 more ! Even picked that up from same dealer too.

I can't believe all of the running around that you have had to do!  It's a 12v car Battery for :censored: sake!!  It's a simple DIY job and the so-called "professionals" at Halfords and Kwik-Fit either can't fit one or need a specialist despite the fact that the Prius was launched in the UK 18 years ago!  Words escape me.

Anyway to fix your windows you just need to to fully lower and fully close each window from the switch on each door panel then the driver's door panel switches will work.  If you are changing your Battery then if possible keep a constant 12v supply to the car while the Battery is being changed or you will need to reset the windows again and sunroof.

I'm going to check my Battery this weekend when it's cold to see if I am likely to need a new one or not this winter.
