Hi,

Bit of an annoying one here. I stupidly managed to close the boot lid of my IS 300h on something hard on the right hand side and there was a cracking noise. The hinge on the right hand side has broken in some way. The plastic shield has popped off the hinge and the long "U" shaped steel bar has become detached from the black metal part of the mechanism.

I can't seem to get the U shaped section to stay back in place. It just pops out again. The U shaped piece seems to go across the roof of the boot and possibly links to the mechanism on the other side.

Any advice or suggestions of how to fix this greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Andy

I’m sorry to be pessimistic but, if my experience of what sounds like the same problem was anything to go by, you will need to go to Lexus or, alternatively, a well-equipped professional body shop, keeping your fingers crossed that no metal part is broken or bent and needs replacing.  If intact, the spring mechanism can quickly be snapped back into position by the use of a dedicated tool that holds the various connecting bars at the correct tension. This tool looks something like a crowbar but, I was told, not all workshops possess one and/or a mechanic skilled in its use.

Sorry to hear that it might not be an easy fix. I'm going to try and pop off the boot trim when I get some time to see whats going on under there.

Funny you should ask for pictures. I was about to ask if someone could kindly post some pics of the right hand boot hinge mechanism so I can see what it is supposed to look like? Slightly worried something might have sheared off.

I'll post some pics up of the damage tomorrow.

Thanks

Andy

I'll be in Palace Grounds Hamilton car park tomorrow (Saturday 8th) with my IS300h if you want to have a look at the boot.

Hi Ianj,

Sorry, I was away on holiday when you posted. Kind off but I am now living in East Lothian.

A picture would still be handy though if anyone could take one? Particularly interested in where the steel bar that runs across the top of the boot ends up on the right hand side.

Hi Andrew,

This may help

Thanks Mike, those pictures were exactly what I needed to see. Really helpful.

These pictures show what has happened. Have tried to put the steel bar back in place but it won't stay put when I close the lid. Think there must be something else that holds it under the trim in top of boot.

It looks as though you need a new wire torsion bar. Suggest you remove the relevant trim to examine further and go from there.

This is on youtube it looks a nightmare, hope yours is more straightforward.
