My cats are both blowing at the flanges really badly - an exhaust place just quoted me a small fortune to replace them. He seemed to think this was very common with ls400s but gave me no alternatives but to chop off the flanges and  weld new ones on, or buy new cats.  Both options were very expensive.  Is there a cheaper option out there?

many owners just get a very simple cost effective welding job done .....  mine was rectified this way probably about 3 or 4 years ago now and seem quite OK since ( and still ) .  cost me about £30/40

It is a common fault on the ls400, when I had an ls400 I had the same issue, got it sorted for £20 though

I've found that going to exhaust places (national chains) is not good as they only quote for fitting parts.

In my area (Essex) there are some small workshops that specialise in welding and pipe bending 'Pipecraft' and this is the type of specialist you should try and find.

Best of luck.

They said that they'd need to remove them to do it and that's where most of the labour costs are.. I presume my cats are OK inside? I have a check engine/loss of power issue but it only happens at high revs and isn't all the time. If I weld them will they be removable? Is there any way of checking if they're ok before welding them up? ECU won't talk to My OBD2 scanner so I can't pull any codes :(

They have to remove the cats? They did mine without removing the cats. I think they are trying to make money of you

I believe mine was a simple but tricky welding job ..  my indy mechanic did it along with his usual service of the car at the time

This thread put up by someone who used Powerflow seems to have been removed.. Why?? Was it because it had Photobucket images which no longer display becuase you now have to pay P-bucket???

Its a pity, as I was able to quote the thread and get my Exhaust y pipe replaced with Stainless welded to the Cats for the same price £200.  Best £200 I've ever spent.   Find a local Powerflow and get a quote based on what others have paid to this chain.

Yes 'PooBucket' or 'PhotoBlockit' has ruined a great number of forum threads on various topics containing an absolute goldmine of technical information for the world to see and gleen from, they ain't silly and tried using this 'control' posistion to maximise profits but seem to have just got themselves a very poor reputation amongst forum users.

Not removed, you just have an incorrect link.

If you use Chrome or Firefox, there is an extension available to fix this - search for “Photobucket fix extension” or similar.

Works for me

Thanks guys, I might email that thread to them and ask them why they think they'd need to remove the cats!

Can't see the point unless you want some sneidy response.  Just find your local Powerflow and quote them the thread and ask price to  replace the Y pipe. The original may be Stainless but the Nickel content will have almost been depleted over the years and so could rust out.
