I replaced both the front and rear brake discs and pads on my daughter’s 2013 Nissan Qashqai this weekend and was surprised at the rear disc/drum set up.

It is virtually identical to my 1994 LS400 with the combined disc and drum parking brake even down to the rubber bung in the disc which is removed to access the knurled nut on the parking brake shoes for adjustment and backing off to allow the disc to come off over the shoes.

Given the difference in age it just goes to show how advanced Lexus were and the reliability of the system if the same is still in use probably to this day.

Also nice to work on a newer vehicle where ALL the bolts come out without a struggle!

Hi Steve

It is not a Lexus first, I am afraid to say Mercedes were using this type of parking brake before the Lexus brand was launched as were a couple of upmarket American brands .As you are aware the brake manufacturers produce these braking systems and the car builders choose the ones they feel suit their models.

On the first series of the LS400 the brakes were poor they suffered from constant seizing of the pistons and the front brakes were not powerful enough .

They made a vast improvement from 94 onwards.
