Replacing Radio do I need a code?

Recommended Posts

I'm thinking about buying another head unit rather than trying to repair the display and back lighting. If I get a second hand unit will it ask me for a code when its plugged in? 1996 LS400.

Cheers, Dunc

I don't think that Lexus subscribed to the radio code system but others might come along and confirm or deny.

has it ever 'asked' for a code if the Battery has been disconnected in the past?

Hi

It was possible to set a code to these units and some members have reported “sec” meaning security appearing on the display whe they have changed the Battery.

I would confirm with the seller if the unit has a code or not and ensure he will take it back if it does and is inoperable.

some members have reported that the master code is the last 4 digits of the vin number but I’m not sure this is verified.

many years ago I used car audio repairs to repair my backlight costing £85 with return postage - you can google them

hope this helps

You will need a code if the unit as been set with one .

The car was sold with no code set and the option was there for the owner to set one, most owners did this.

It is a four digit code and is set on the graphic display through the security interface.

If the unit as had a code set and you cannot source it from the previous owner there is a dance that clears the code using various on offs of the lights pressing buttons on the display at the same time all done in a set sequence..

I have this procedure on file for the Mark 4 .and I believe there is a sequence for the mark 3 but it might not be the same .

Check it out on the archives both on this forum and the US owners forum.

Thanks for the replies. I'll have to take a punt on one and hope its not already been coded. There's one on eBay at the moment thats fully functioning so I've sent a question asking if it is coded or not.
