Lexus quote £295 for the cambelt alone - do you need everything else done (water pump, pulleys etc)

£1k sounds expensive - mine here in London was £800 ish

It doesn't seem expensive, it is expensive. It may be a Lexus but it's still just an engine that has parts common to almost any other car engine, ie, pistons, belts, valves etc., etc., and as such, any competent mechanic worth his salt at any garage should be able to do this job with his eyes closed. The cambelt, water pump, tensioners and coolant were all replaced on my RX300 at a little garage here in Preston (not even a Toyota or Lexus specialist) for about £465 if I remember correctly.

That is expensive, the cambelt change alone should be around £300 and as fitting the tensioners and a water pump is another hour in the workshop £90 the parts are about £250 total £600 tops.

Lexus Stockport are as the yanks say gouging ,tell him to go to a Toyota garage or a Toyota  independent.

I suspect that the dealership is asking a premium because they know the job will likely be a one off and they won't see the car again.

Hi,

I cannot comment on the ls400, as I have a ls430.  About a year ago I had my cam belt, water pump etc done and had a new radiator fitted at the same time.  I had it done at Lexus Bolton, and the whole job came to about 800 pounds, and that included a loan car for the day.  Nothing but praise for Lexus Bolton.  The price without the rad would have been circa 500 pounds.

1000 pounds is far too much

PS: Sorry but I just cannot get the pound sign to work.

Here's wishing each and everyone a very happy and trouble free motoring new year.

Bob.

On my mk4 LS400 I used to have it cost me £450 for belt, waterpump, tensioner and coolant change at the local Indy I use.

I'm shortly to find out about mine ....  my indy is suggesting the Gates kit, belt, pulleys etc and waterpump, replace serpentine belt too and i guess there's some coolant issues too with the waterpump change.

I'll let you know likely ££££ when I know more ...... still got about 2k miles to go before it's due to change though, about 2 months I think

I'm expecting maybe around £600  .....  it's a long long job

I got this PC about 2 or 3 years ago, it was on windows 7 then, windows 10 offered itself as a download a couple of weeks after I got it so I downloaded it, possibly it's something to do with 'those' factors, the pound sign is on my keyboard but it types this #, the dollar sign types this $:whip:

Lexus parts charged me £600 for the cambelt, tensioner/s, waterpump and new bolt two + years ago.  Whats more they said they didn't sell a Gasket kit with it. I wouldn't make the same mistake again.

You could try David at Lex-Tek Autos 01909 774300 it might be worth the trip to Sheffield.

I'll let you know what I'm going to be charged for the Gates kit when my indy orders it up, probably in a few weeks time when he has my car when I'm in India
