Please forgive my ignorance, but can someone please explain what happens when one leaves the auto box in P as opposed to applying the foot operated handbrake ?

The engine compression is holding the car in a stationary position but should not be relied on to hold the car in a fixed place as the weight of the car and its load can move the engine through its rotation and the car will creep backwards or forwards.

When the autobox is in P there a pawl that engages a notched wheel on the output shaft preventing it rotating.

Yes it does ,and I am mistaken in that I have crossed into a manual transmission, either way do not depend on it on a incline of any sort.

Agreed. We used to have the posts numbered, wonder why it was discontinued?
