Nearly Got Scammed!

Phew.. was lucky

I had an email from eBay

here is the message

Dear eBay customer,

During our regularly scheduled account maintenance and verification procedures, we have detected a slight error in your billing information.

This might be due to either of the following reasons:

1. A recent change in your personal information ( i.e.change of address).

2. Submiting invalid information during the initial sign up process.

3. An inability to accurately verify your selected option of payment due to an internal error within our processors.

Please update and verify your information by clicking the link below:

http://www.ebay.com/billing-issues/sign-in

If your account information is not updated within 48 hours then your ability to sell or bid on eBay will become restricted.

Note the very end of the url....

the first part is what you see in your browser which made me think it was authentic... then noticed that directly after the .com part of the domain was not seperated with a slash... this would not have worked.. so i scrolled along the massive url and noticed it was a totally differnet website.

What was scary is I actually put in my username and password which it would have logged... but when they come to ask for the credit card I noticed no padlock

they did this pretty well and nearly caught me out.. but i spotted it before they got me.

Be carefull out there folks... there will be so many people scammed after this.

I had exactly same email a couple of days, but stopped a problem straight away I never had an eBay account

Im glad you realised before you proceeded with entering your information.

If that was me I dont think I would have been as smart to check the url.

Scammers nowadays are getting better at trying to trick/manipulate us, they certainly go to a lot of trouble to try and achieve this.

But thanks for letting me know about this new scam.

no worries.. i had to change passwords real pronto... before they changed my account password and started bidding with my account!

The latest IE download that has just appeared is supposed to prevent this (known as phishing) but as usual it apparently doesn't fix it fully.

Don't respond to any emails that want CC details via a supplied link.
