Noticed a bit of a rattle a couple of days ago. Popped the bonnet today and it seems the water pump is on its way out. It’s my only car and I use it to commute to work, round trip 20 miles per day. I’m planning to take it to my local mechanic on Friday morning, should I be concerned about driving it for the next four days? Also, any idea of cost? Europarts has a pump for £130 so maybe a couple of hours labour, £250 ish? Thanks in advance!

Water pumps seem to be cheaper here

https://www.autodoc.co.uk/car-parts/oem/1610039436

(I've not used them, simply a google search on the part number 16100-39436)

Also, don't be afraid to ring a Lexus dealer and ask for prices, europarts are not always cheaper than Lexus.

If it's not leaking, or you're not seeing high temps, then you should be fine. Mine is a little noisy but has been for about 3 years!

I’ve not noticed high temps but I’ve not really been on a run since I noticed the noise. I’ll check again tomorrow for any sign of leaks but I didn’t notice any when I checked Early. Thanks for the help

What is the mileage? Waterpumps usually goes between 80-120k miles. Though I would expect it to leak and be replaced before it would disintegrate internally.

If you feel confident enough would you do it yourself?

I definitely would after seeing this great 'How To ' video and it does not require any special tools or intrusion into any other specialist systems ie A/C. Have watched the vid a couple of times looking for any 'troublesome' sections and it looks a pretty straightforward operation if you take your time and double check as you go.

if the new pump casing has a ground down area then it is almost certainly an Oem pump with the logo removed! And make sure it comes with a new metal/rubber gasket, some don't. Eurocarparts Don't mention the seal/gasket so don't bank on getting one included but this genuine one does, and Could be got for a bit less than the listed price I reckon!

Linas  - Car is on 92k,  2009 plate

So it is basically spot on, it would be standard job with 100k service.

Was it Lexus or Indie? And obviously I hope they changed coolant at the same time  (kind of obvious).

Independent. Part was £90 plus vat, billed three hours labour. I’d love to have a go myself but it’s my only car so it needed to be done for Monday.

Edit - yes, coolant changed and was itemised on invoice

Good result there then! £227 all in, but me being me would still be getting up close and personal and doing it myself, admittedly got a second car so no pressure on having to getting it done in a certain time frame. But once again glad you're all sorted ( for another 90k anyway!!!)

cheers paul m.
