Hi all, so yesterday driving my LS400 I noticed only half of the rev counter needle was illuminated. I did what I guess many would do in this situation and gave the top of the binnacle a good whack. (I did this as many of you said you did this when your rev counter stopped working and it worked) so all this did was make the fuel gauge needle drop right to the bottom and now it wont rise up again.

So now I have the rev counter needle problem still but also the temp gauge needle has gone haywire.

In other news though it had its MOT last week (first in my ownership) and it flew through with no advisories.

Any thoughts/ideas all?

The needle on the rev counter as failed and will require a strip down of the combination meter to rectify it ,there are numerous options in  the forum archives.

The temperature gauge is probably a loose connection caused by your remedial action and can be fixed when you take out the instrument cluster.

Thanks, are there any recommended people that can do these types of jobs? Seems a bit of a specialist one

There are numerous instrument repairers on line who do this kind of repair to different vehicle makes but will normally expect you to send the dial cluster which means removing it from the car .

The forum archives and the american US Lexusowners forum have tutorials on these procedures.but you need to be competent and have the confidence to take these tasks on otherwise leave well alone or you will get in a mess.

If you don't feel you can take on this task look for a repairer close to you and ask them if they will take out the instrument cluster they may have that service but you will probably have to leave the car with them.

Thanks for that, will do as you have suggested

Slight update have the cluster booked in for a repair with BBA Reman in medway, had a long chat with them over the phone and they said is a common problem on these cars, especially due to the age.

My problem now though is how to remove the cluster myself as they do a pickup and delivery, usually it is pretty straightforward, but I cannot find any guides on how to do it on the Mark 3 LS400. Is anyone able to point me in the right direction? On the MK2 I believe there are easy access screws but there is none at all the Mark three and am a bit lost

Please google reviews on BBA Reman!

To be fair I used them last year to overhaul my Audi TT cluster which is a real known problem on them for pixels ting and they did a fantastic job

Just google "remove combination meter from Lexus ls400 mark 4" several links come up for instructions.

If your Lexus is a 98 its a Mark 4

No it's the last of the MK3, have seen tutorials for the MK3 but not MK3

Still no joy in finding a guide to remove this for the MK3 have spend ages in the car looking to see how it could work but there are no screw fixings for the binnacle. Had to cancel it with BBA Reman as cannot get it out of the car. They also only work on the units and don't have mechanics to remove them for customers so that potential option is out.

Any ideas folks? Very frustrating
