Maybe without being too sycophantic.......if this was another mass market car manufacturers forum the question might be a tad more blurred.

It's an equation as previously mentioned......but would we be so certain with a fiat / ford / Vauxhall etc. ?

I've done 55k ( total now 92k) in my IS.....and it's cost me a rear calliper above normal service items.......what's not to like?

I would say its all about the money. if you earn at least 30k a year get a new car.

It is really nice to have a new car, because if you see any scrach any broken plastic piece or kerbed wheel ,you know you did it :D

when you buy second hand car its like researching you dont know anything about the car , and when something goes wrong then you see what has been done to it broken plastics in some places missing screws electrical tape on wires etc... :D So really alot of questions comes up .

But yea price diference is huge. i would rather buy car up 5 years old instead of a new one. Some people just get lucky even when they buy 10 old car and don`t have to invest into it other then normal service.

another thing is brand i would rather buy older lexus , bmw mercedes then brand new pegeot renault vw skoda and other **** cars.

I've bought a few brand new vehicles.

My first was a 1970 Ford Escort, having part exed my first ever car, a 66 Ford Anglia.

I remember being excited going to pick it up, but being disappointed within a very short distance, that it felt like just another car.

The same has been true of my other two brand new vehicles, very nice, but no different to the various "nearly new" cars I've bought.

As an aside, and an indication of how cars have evolved over the years, my 1966 Anglia failed it's first mot in 1969, with corroded rear spring hangers, then, not long after getting the welding done and an mot issued, the engine gave up the ghost.

I have to admit I was a bit of a lunatic back then, so maybe the engine was down to me, but the corrosion was a shocker really.

I think all modern cars are reliable nowadays except..........some are more reliable than others !

I've had many brand new cars, all company cars......they're only new for the first day or so

maybe they are first 5 years  then problems start poping out . i had 2 vw passats 1.9tdi pd unbeatable engines good gear box  but suspension is terrible had to change parts every year  because allways something bouncing loose metal noise....   and i realy drive nice trying to avoid pot holes slow down to 10mph at speed bumps but still..... electronic things breaks as well from time to time. its just poor quality cars. dont understand why people love them so much specially diesels with egr problems, engines full of carbon. Most of the cars in garages you will see is vw audi skoda seat... i would rather pay 200 £ for one part in lexus wich will last long and it it good quality , then changing parts to passat every year 50£ each....

@steveledzep Yes you are absolutely right, it was either this or a mini and a knowledgeable friend said go for the car with what was a version of a Coventry climax ( No laughing please) a great engine, which apparently started life as a water pump for the fire brigade !

Think memory serves me right on most of that anyway, all the imp variants had a reputation for unreliability overheating, gearbox, and drive shaft doughnuts.

Never had any issues with mine 👍

They are good cars but not that reliable. My Octavia's turbo went, that negates all the economy I got. Some makes are more reliable than others. Yes, I have bought some dogs - Volvo, Skoda, BMW, Renault - but I have never had a bad Japanese derived car. I will stick to experience, good and bad. Yes, you can be unlucky and buy a poor Lexus but you are more likely to get a poor Renault, Peugeot, Citreon in my opinion. Possibly younger members on this forum have a different perception of reliability - I remember the good old days as Mikeyv has explained.

Does anyone feel that any specific brand feel, perform differently.....manufactured post 2008 to present?

I have a friend ( motor trade) that is convinced MB & Audi have squeezed on quality.....BMW stayed the same.....Jag up...VW down.

Conspiracy clap trap or real?

I'm wondering even with Lexus if my next model choice (post 2010 model) will still be as bullet proof?

Weren't they one of the first engines using aluminium?  Was it the block or the head, the latter I suspect ?  Caused head gasket issues I guess, hence overheating problems.

I'd never buy a French car.

@steveledzep Yes right again on all counts, still a good engine though, a poor mans 911 😏

Can't give you much direct experience of post 2008 cars, but the forums and Honest John give an indication. I try and make sure all the usual boxes are ticked before I buy a car - but when I bought my older BMW with a full BMW service history, about 90,000 on the clock, it turned out to be a lemon. All the problems I have had with reliability, have been from non-Japanese derived cars. Just my limited experience. I would have no hesitation in taking my Lexus to Spain  - and I WOULD expect it to return!

Believe it or not my previous car was a Fiat Panda a diesel at that, which i bought new through a car broker web site. Despite many peoples misgivings it was completely reliable, only needing servicing and tyres, this model was built in Poland, maybe more fastidious than Italian factory.

My worst car a Vauxhall Viva 8 years old must have had a different problem every week, non start, electrical issues, rough running. To this day i would never touch another Vauxhall.

My only brand new car was a 54 plate Mazda6. ..I'm old school...none of this PCP stuff, this was cash.

It quickly dawned on me it was no better than my old Mondeo (they may have shared the same chassis - not sure)

My first visit to a Lexus dealership was about 18 months later and it got chopped in for an older IS200.....worlds apart . Many years later with a decent pension or two I shaved £10,000 off the price of an IS200t by getting a 10 month old dealer demo with 1500 miles on the clock. In the Lexus stakes this is still a humble car.

Naturally If my financial circumstances were different I wouldn't have done this but I could afford it so I did and I know it will last me a bloody long time with minimal grief.

We've had a couple of cars from new and always regretted it due to depreciation - the worst being a 30K nissan leaf worth 6k after 2 years 24k miles (loved the car though and will definitely go full electric for one car in the next 5 years). We still own the other 'new' car - a diesel kia ceed which is still under warranty so we're trying to get our money's worth out of it.

That said I've also had a number of disastrous 2nd hand buys - a £600 audi A6 which lasted less than a month before cylinder head failure and a peugeot 407 coupe which destroyed it's gearbox (warranty paid 3k to fix) had multiple sensor / electrical gremlins and then started making a road speed noise which no one could fix so that got handed back under halves and thirds.

They were learning experiences though, I'll probably never buy another new car as I don;t like the new cars I could afford , I hate the idea of losing thousands the moment i take ownership and I'm much more inclined to walk away from a used car if anything at all 'spooks' me - a noise, a wobble, a salesman's attitude I've walked because of all of them safe in the knowledge that the right car is out there and will come along. The only thing i will say is that when buying 2nd hand the right car is often a fair distance away so don;t be afraid to travel.

This is actually a very good question and subject to a lot of opinion. Here is mine:

MB certainly squeezed on quality between 2007 and roughly 2015 but this was more in terms of interior and exterior quality rather than mechanical. Mechanically they've been the same i.e. hit or miss depending on your luck. The interiors took a large step up in 2015, better materials used for each model that was refreshed after 2015 and it all started off with the latest C class. Having said that, there are certain issues with exterior quality - gone is the rusty arches but wheels have proven to be a big problem.

Audi quality has improved both inside and out. Again, have certain issues which are more common - electrical problems mainly. Mechanically have probably stayed about the same. VW is the same as Audi - definite improvement in all areas since 2008, just take a look at an 05 Golf and a 13 plate Golf for example.

BMW quality has reduced slightly - they're cutting corners in places that people don't notice - i.e harder plastics further downwards but BMW wheels are notorious for not being painted properly in the area where the nuts are. Orange peel seems to be a bigger problem on the newer cars as well. Their leather quality has declined as well.

Jag - I would say they've improved in some areas and reduced in others. Mechanically they are better now than back then but the quality of materials used in older Jags was far far superior than the Hyundai quality plastics used in cars like the XE for example.

Overall, there's nothing to suggest that post 2010 Lexus models are any less reliable than older models.

Probably not but they are definitely cutting corners in terms of standard equipment. My previous car (2010) was better-equipped than the one I have now despite it being newer and the same model/trim level & spec.

Latest IS model is no different. Some things that used to be standard are now an option or not available at all. Lexus seem more interested in adding stuff no decent driver would ever need or want like lane departure warnings and auto high-beam.

This was also one of the contributing factors i decided not to bother with a new or nearly new as i also found out newer models within my reasonable budget did not have most of the toys which were standard on older models and if i decided to go full spec will be in my case too much £££ for what i need a car for when an older model packs pretty much the same spec..
