Afternoon all, my first post.

I (we!) own a 2007 RX400, previously had a 2005 Is200 and just ordered a new RX450

looking for some advice re dealer extras / cover etc

  • Gap insurance
  • Supaguard inside and out
  • Smart Cover (minor body damage insurance)
  • tyre and alloy wheel insurance

my initial thought is that gap insurance reflects personal circumstances and appetite for risk and the others could all be acquired cheaper elsewhere or aren't necessary but I would be very interested in any thoughts

cheers Ian

Congrats Ian....   I have no experience of any of those insurances.   Personally, I'd just be inclined to be careful.  The cynic in me thinks they're all ruses to extract extra coins from you !

Very nice! What spec and colour combo did you go or?

Ill explain dealer cover below:

1) GAP cover - seriously cheaper elsewhere - if you really want it look at the likes of ALA but personally I wouldn't really bother with it as you'll get a new car for the 1st year anyway if you crash it so you're actually only paying for the remaining 2 years.

2) Supagard inside and out - again not needed. The product itself is a bog standard sealant. If you really want protection inside and out, take it to a detailer and get a ceramic coating put on (if you want a list, I can send you one in your area but the one I would go to in London is Topaz detailing, speak to Annabel! It'll cost roughly the same if not slightly more but will cover you for atleast 2 years rather than 6 months like the Supagard

3) Smart cover - again, not needed and expensive for what you get. Cheaper elsewhere. Remember that Lexus will contract these out to 3rd party smart repairers anyway.

4) Tyre and alloy wheel cover - again cheaper elsewhere. ALA is pretty good but the RX450h tyres have a large profile so I dont know how you could kerb them?

Hope that helps!

Luxury, Sonic Titanium and Black. not the most exciting combo i'll admit.

That's what i thought, I'll have a look at Topaz detailing, thanks I'm sure i could find a way to kerb the alloys!

Incidentally i hadn't picked up on the replacement car in 1st year - excuse my naivety how does that work?

Essentially if your car gets written off within the 1st year you'll get a new car from the insurance company. It's in most policies nowadays.

Kerbed alloys will be about £100 each to fix. Be aware that the ones on the Luxury model are diamond cut and can only be done 2-3 times before needing replacement or powder coating and refurbished wheels won't look the same as before as they need to cut the metal down

Topaz detailing is great, might be on the pricey side and deal mainly with very high end vehicles but give Annabel a shout I'm sure she'll help. Lots of options available but really you just need a new car protection package with/without ceramic sealant if you think that'll benefit you
