The Mini is an absolute classic car; started a revolution in car design, it's an icon.  Handles brilliantly, nippy, great use of space in a very small package, easy to work on, cheap to repair, lots of specialists to repair and maintain, peanuts to run. Monte Carlo Rally winner etc. etc.  And it's fun!  You get out of a mini and even if you've only been round town it will put a smile on your face.  My very first car.  Sure they can be unreliable, they're noisy compared to modern cars, tiny boot and very prone to the R word!

I've never been in an IS250 but as a Lexus I'd expect it to be reliable, smooth, powerful, beautifully finished etc.  But will anybody remember it in 58 year's time? They'll remember the brand in fact it might still be around churning out electric vehicles that drive themselves and give you a shower, shave and haircut whilst you have the latest blockbuster telepathically transmitted to your brain!  But individual cars?  Maybe not although I do stand to be corrected!

Now if the other car was a 2CV that would have been a slightly more difficult choice:-)

Why?

My word exactly!

Strangely enough, I was in Brighton at lunch time today getting fuel when an early Mini rolled in and two of the tallest men I've ever seen got out of it!!  How does that work?  Mind you, however it worked, I don't want one!

To be honest, I have never driven an old Mini. All I remember as a passenger was how large and stark the interior seemed. The bone jarring ride would not be for me. yes, it is and always will be a classic. Woyuld I swap a Mimi for my LS400 (soon to be a classic) NEVER!

The two cars in question.

One of the last Rover minis to be sold new in September 2001. 1275 CC Multi Point Injection

2015 Lexus IS300h

My opinion:

For a 30 minute commute to work through town – Lexus, it’s easier to drive in town traffic and more economical. The mini doesn’t like going slower than 40 mph!

For a track day – the mini, it’s more involving to drive.

To go to the shops – Lexus, it’s got a bigger boot, although the mini may be easier to park.

To learn to drive in – mini, no ABS/Power Steering/Traction control. It’s manual and you have to learn how to control a car without the driver aids.

For a quick drive down an A road – Lexus or mini they’re both fun to drive.

For a long motorway cruise – Lexus, it’s more comfortable and quiet on the motorway.

To learn mechanics – the mini, there always something needs doing on it.

To have peace of mind to know that it will work when you want it to – Lexus.

To save money – the mini, it’s not going to depreciate if looked after and it cost £350 to get through the MOT but the Lexus cost £450 for a service and has depreciated a lot in value over the last year.

To get to your destination relaxed – Lexus.

To be told “You have the best car on the forecourt” when filling up – mini.

Two very different cars and both have their appeal.

The passenger, he must have been over 6.6! (and probably still is!!)

Although I'm not sure the video will play....

If it was a second car, the Mini. If it was my only car and my daily drive over a lengthy period, the Lexus. I have a real soft spot for the classic Minis
