How many miles to reach operating temperature?

As some may be aware, I'm potentially looking at an IS-F or RC-F as my next car later this year or early next. 

As is the case with a lot of us, I keep changing my mind back and forth - both to the hybrid Lexus models and to other models altogether.

The latest issues I'm reading about is short commutes causing potential problems - I have a 5 mile each way daily commute with longer runs of 20-30 miles on some weekends. How long does the 5.0 V8 engine take to get to operating temperature and do you see a 5 mile commute as an issue?

I know for a fact that diesel is a no-go for my commute - although plenty do it. I can't help but think that reading online forums blows potential issues out of proportion and that a 5.0 litre V8 will be no worse than a 2 litre diesel for such a commute - yet it's what the majority of the country are doing.

A small petrol or an electric car seems to be the best choice for my usage but I can't get excited about a small petrol car and the currently available electric cars don't float my boat from a looks perspective. Perhaps it's time to put a booking deposit on a Tesla Model 3

Sounds short to me.

 

I generally ignore water temp and go on oil temp. 3 bars means fully warm.

 

At the moment my 14 mile drive to work sees 3 bars on oil temp. In Winter I don't think it would get to 3.

That's what the head is telling me. An RC-F is the wrong choice and a Tesla Model 3 would be the better option. I'm not yet sold on the looks but, of course, we haven't yet seen them in the flesh.

That being said, I'm sure the Lexus V8 engine is significantly more bulletproof than a lot of the alternatives, such as the E92 M3 and the last generation C63 - so I'm not sure whether I'm overthinking it.

My RC300h gets up to operating temp (going by the water temp gauge) within 2mls, even in winter (only had the car 6months!)

My CLS55 would get up to operating temp within 2-3 miles in summer approx 5miles in winter. That's a supercharged 5ltr V8 and 11yrs old

That all said, I don't think a 5 mile commute is going to do any ICE any favours long term

4 miles to work every day for the last 6 years hasn't done my ISF any harm, lucky if it hits 2 bars on the oil gauge each way.

Go the long way home from work once every few days and give it some revs.

I do plenty of short trips (a consequence of village life) and was also concerned. So I make sure I warm the engine up properly at least a couple of times a week. Both Fs have been absolutely fine with this treatment

I totally agree - go the long way home once or twice per week! and in a v8 it will be fun (roads permitting). I usually run my engine for a short while before driving off in any case and would recommend it if you are able to do so (without vexing the neighbours)!

I drive 6 miles to work everyday and I will struggle to get 3 bars on the oil temp in that time.  The torque Pro has water temp up to 70-80 within a few miles but oil temperature is not on the app.  Past turbo experience suggests that oil temp significantly trails water temp.

Id give it a good 10 mins drive before giving the car a sustained hammering through the gears personally

Oil temp is the important one!

Just be careful with this as remember the gearbox and diff still won't be warm when you eventually drive off 😉

My commute to work is 1 mile. 2 years in an IS250 and 18 months in an ISF, absolutely no issues. Always potter to and from work and allow time to warm up on the drive and arrival at work. I enjoy a few detours during the week to let her stretch her legs.

I would take every opportunity to drive an IS-F, as I do my RC300h but a 1 mile commute??

A brisk walk or gentle cycle surely, much better all round?

I always drive my car sensibly under 3k revs for atleast 20mins before giving it some beans, done this to all my cars. 

This will ensure the engine oil, gearbox fluid and diff oil are properly warm up.

Yep, in and out of the office all day so need the car onsite, even though it is only a mile. I think these petrol cars are built to survive a one mile trip to work at 1500 rpm.

Just thinking of the oil and exhaust, all that condensation not being driven off?

Seeing your driving round the Welsh roads, I'd be surprised if your car has stopped making those ticking noises cars make after hard work!!!!

Don't forget temperature plays a big factor. Like others, I wait for 3 bars on the OEM oil temp gauge. 

If it's cold takes longer for sure.

I do around a 3/4 mile commute to work, and although the engine temperature reaches normal running temperature in that time,  the oil and transition  temperature only gets to around a quarter, the RC-F starts at 3500 reeves when you first start it and will increase the revs allowed as it walms up, in the depth of winter i can travel my hole journey to work before it reaches the 7200 rev, i don't think the open vents at the front help, in my option they should have automatic flaps that only open when needed, i would think this would improve m.p.g.

My car is happy returning to normal driving rather than trying to keep up with you hoodlums..... 😉
