Ive had a lot of probs sourcing ferodo premium pads, has anyone tried brembo pads & are they a quiet alternative?

Posted

Hi Denis,

I have brembo pads fitted to my LS.

The braking is really good, probably the best I have had from the various pads I have tried.

However, there is a slight grumble just as you come to a stop which I have never had from any other pad I have tried.

I think I will probably use brembo again purely because of the braking performance.

I hope this helps you make your decision.

I've actually had that slight grumble from all the LS's I've owned, regardless of the make of pads, I just assumed they all do it.

I have not noticed it at all on the ferodo premium, just how 'slight is it' & does it only occure when stopping,or, as in inner//central london we are using brakes on off very, very, very often, it's almost a permanent feature of driving in inner & central......is it loud enough to get people stareing?......a "slight grumble" does not sound to bad, but....better just like a normal ford escort or 1950's Morris Minor, quite ie no excess noise at all

Anyone know why the LS400 is like this with after market pads.

I would say that the grumble is more of a feeling than a sound.

It only occurs as the car comes to a complete stop and lasts for a fraction of a second

Thanks for that steve, yes I understand that sort of description..........looks like I will be fitting them then, pity about the ferodo premium though, are front pads also called 'axle pads'....that term comes up frequently in recent searches for the front pads, never for rear pads

Mintex also grumble, especially if you creep the car forward on the brake, when parking in a tight spot, for example.

someone on this forum fitted mintex some time ago, I think within this past 9 months, I asked them to give feedback but they never came back with any.

Also, I have found impossible to find any parking brake pads, Ill try lexus in the hope they are not to expemsive

brembo pads have very good braking power, but make lot of black dust. Better you go with ceramic pads (like the original equipment pads), but they will need more time to build up to the full braking power (about 200miles).

From experience I can recommend:

High performance - AKEBONO ACT665 - ProAct Ultra Premium  - ceramic - little dust
Daily Driver          - BOSCH BC665         - Premium QuietCast     - ceramic - little dust

They work fine, from a stopping point of view, and they were noisy from the start, having been fitted along with new discs.

The noise did reduce after a few hundred miles, but it's still there, as I said above.

Hope that helps.

I had a brembo set up on my XKR and was worried about cars running into the back of me as boy did it stop.

The pads were Jag boxed...my S type runs on mintex bit squeaky at first now very good.

Lexus have ceramic content and when due I'll fork out for the OE.

You wouldn't hear it from outside and it's more like Steve said, a feeling more than a sound.  It's certainly not a problem, it's just with everything else being so quiet it's noticeable, albeit brief. The previous owner always had genuine parts fitted and it even did it when I bought it from him.

Here in UK I came up with what must be the only remaining Ferodo front pads in the world, my cars first reg is Aug 1995 & these are for "All LEXUS LS (UCF20) 400 (264Hp) parts
Mr Auto

Note I have not yet tried to source from lexus but have messaged the shop for the front pads, no reply yet

OK, I'll update this again as pads are commonly needed, I just called lexus edgware rd and they actually have them in stock (front pads) cost

£81:70, so around 30 quid more than brembo, which in the scheme of things aint to bad, so I guess thats it...............................finally:yawn:

I have gone through about 5 different pads as I was never happy with the squaeling. Only thing to sort it out is to buy from dealers as well as the disks. Nuff said.

I think what's forgotten at times is the effect that the brake shims etc have on noise I'd replace those if looking tired. I did when I replaced discs and pads (Lexus) all round and I have no noise to speak of.

Well, yesterday I had the brembo pads fitted front & lexus back, Ive only done around 25mile so far & some of that what someone called 'creeping brakeing'. I have had no noise issues whatsoever so far with them & no indication that might evlove, my indi mechi uses them as a norm when fitting pads, so thanks for all the feedback on them and also other pads (mintex etc), helped make the decision choice between these & Lexus front .

just because I saw brembo mentioned:

is250, replaced all 4 discs and all pads with brembo. dear god.. the noise.... will never buy them again.

brembo definitely better than the pagid pads. Less grumble and better braking power. Not as good as the original lexus pads though. Definitely the best pads and worth the extra money.

Posted

Well Im 4 days in now, appx 70 miles, & they are still as quiet as when i wrote Tues evening,

I see others have a problem especially 'sukrus' & the is250, I have no idea why. Someone said the originsl lexus on the LS400 were ceramic but Im a mechi illiterate so cant comment except Ive noticed there are problems with aftermarket pads more than I have ever experienced or known with any other make of car

Interesting this...Pagid are not the old Pagid. They sold out. So the brand is used and now applied to multiple specs and orders. In principal this is what premium manufacturers do for all motor manufacturers but the risk is inferior products.

Merc Pagid pads from Mercedes garage are superior to those "identical" on the distribution market.

Bed the brakes in. If you haven't cleaned and put brake grease on key areas for years then they will squeak.

There is a hard bedding-in surface on new pads that cuts to the disk, it squeaks and groans.

Don't buy cheap. I've done it.
