What are the views of forum members on self-sealing tyres such as the Pirelli Cinturato or Continental ContiSeal?

Just another way of saying "Runflats"

Avoid like the plague - worst tyres ever invented and they're extremely hard so will affect the ride.

Father in law took his runflats off the MINI and it completely transformed it for the better in terms of ride quality

Are you sure?

Check this video... in particular the last part that shows how the self sealing works:

Well technically yes its still a "runflat" tyre in a general sense

Two types - the traditional runflats with steel hardwalls supporting the weight of the car without any air inside. Or, the seal type which are supposed to block off the puncture site.

Traditional runflats have their issues, i.e. handling, heavy steering etc. Im not sure about the sealing type as Ive never had them. However, it seems that self sealing types don't have any protection against sidewall punctures, only on tread punctures.

The self-seal type seem to be relatively new technology and Continental have been the main suppliers to VW for the Contiseal so thats probably the one Id try.

Im skeptical, reason being that I have only had 1 puncture in 10 years of driving so you wouldn't really know if they work unless you put a nail in yourself and test it.

Hankook also do self sealing tyres, but I'm not sure what sizes are available. The sidewalls are harder than the standard Hankooks, but no where near as hard as run flats, so at least that's a bit of a bonus when it comes to harsh rides. As Rayaan says, the goo only covers the tread area so the sidewalls are vulnerable.
