oil in spark plugs, rocker cover gasket?

Hi

 

ive been having multiple misfire on cylinders 2 , 3 ,4 and 5, every time i clear code it re appears, seems to appear really fast on COLD DAYS? my spark plugs have oil on the top when i take it out which means oil is leaking into them? so am i correct in saying i need to replace rocker cover gasket to stop the oil from seeping into the spark plugs? and would the oil on spark plug cause misfire right?

I am by no means an expert, but I do know that oil on plug tips can cause misfires since they can't spark properly.

There can be multiple reasons for there being oil present, so does it smoke out the back?  Oil well gaskets, worn valve guides or piston rings are just some of the possibilities.

the car has been on lpg for around 6 years but recently ive noticed it does smoke alot more then usual on petrol and on lpg, lpg is normal to smoke as its lpg but on petrol ive noticed it smokes quite abit too.

 

so how would i break it down to find the problem?

It can be tricky.

You could try a compression test, although that wouldn't show up any problems with the oil control ring.  A leak down test should show you if there is any leaks from the cylinders.

Also, does it smoke all the time?  If it smokes only after moving off from idle, then the valve stems are more likely.

Of course, it could be simply the spark plug gaskets, so that might be the best place to start since it probably wouldn't cost that much.

thanks for your replies bro, so basically who can do a leak down test? im assuming as i mostly run it on lpg it is most likeley the valve seals / stems.

its smoking all the time now, on petrol, on gas, on idle on driving.

Any decently equipped garage should be able to perform the test for you.  If you had the correct tools, it is quite easy to do yourself.

I can't really comment on how LPG effects valve stem seals, but I have read a couple of forums that say it can have an effect.

If the smoke is getting worse that quickly, it doesn't sound good, so get it checked out as soon as possible.  How much oil are you losing?

LPG tends to put more strain on the spark plugs.

I think they ended their life. They do not work properly therefore you have a moisture on them and misfire problem.

I would change them and I am pretty sure that will end the problem.

If it won't help then you can do the tests mentioned above.

ive changed spark plugs already brother, i put in brand new bosch super plus 4, still covered in oil so i believe oil is leaking on to them.

so break it down for me, on the is200 engine, what would or might need replacing to stop oil from leaking onto spark plugs?

Well, I can't say specifically for the IS200 engine, but in general, oil on spark plugs comes from spark plug gaskets, valve stem seals or piston rings.

The gaskets could be a good place to start since they shouldn't be too expensive to replace.

However, since the plugs need to be taken out to replace the gaskets, it would be a good time to do a compression/leak down test as well.

So, what I would suggest is, find a garage that you are reasonably confident can do the job, buy the gaskets and some new plugs, and get them to do the tests to see where the leak is coming from.  If the leak is not coming from the valve stems or piston rings (doing a compression test to check the rings), then you can get them to replace the gaskets and hope that solves the issue for you.

At this juncture, there is no point speculating any further as to what it might be since it is impossible to tell without a proper check.  Hopefully, a competent mechanic will be able to give you an answer quickly.

thankyou for your help bro, i have a garage i trust but i need to wait few more weeks because my second car is being fixed atm, once thats on the road i can put this baby in the garage. appreciate all the help lads, will update you if theres any more problems or solutions.
