The Black Merc is the CLS55 AMG, an amazing 4 seater coupe, Clarkson termed as a thug in a silk dressing gown... Supercharged 5.4ltr monster that wafted along until prodded when all hell broke loose, loved it.

The Chevette HSR was a mental car, highly tuned 2.6ltr and very low geared. Would rip to 100mph in a blink of the eye...

I absolutely loved the shape of that CLS and you had the right engine fella, don't know if you saw it in my list not in the league of your CLS but a fine good looking car in its own right The Passat CC 3.6.

Peter as an aside my Cavalier SRi 130 was exactly like yours I see you hail from Wiltshire, I sold it to someone over they way and if memory serves me correctly it was written off at the North Bradley crossroads A350.

The reg number was E605 YHL.

Mine wasn't OEM but converted by myself and brother-in-laws. Very fast but also somewhat fragile, had it in bits by the roadside on more than one occasion!

I'm guessing you're a bit of a petrolhead!!🤔🤔🤔 so try answer this, if all of the cars above were lined up in front of you and you could take one for a blast on your favourite road with no traffic, which would you pick??

Posted

Fiat Punto

Volkswagen Golf

Alfa Romeo 156 twinspark

Alfa Romeo 159 TI 2.0 jtdm

and now Lexus 300 IS300h sport

I do really like Alfas and I considered getting the 2 litre petrol Gulia as it costs the same as the Lexus. I had the 159 for over 6 years and can't say it was trouble free motoring, I'm sure the Lexus will excel in the reliability stakes and was the number one reason I bought one.

Impressive. What was the M5 like?

Great handling car for its size , but liked a drink , oil too lol.

Yes i was sooo lucky to own a Lotus Carlton , every one of my car friends loved it. Every journey in it felt like an adventure as i got stopped and asked questions every day lol.

The main question being 'is that a real one ?'

Austin Metro VDP (silver) - student car, ran it with the suspension empty for a while and it handled like a go-cart. Blew the headgasket, got it fixed and sold it to my brother.

Ford Escort Estate (white) - meh, did the job

VW Bora (silver) - First 'proper' car out of being a student

Audi A4 TDi saloon (Silver)

MGB Roadster (red) - has this built for me, Nightfire Red blue with magnolia leather and the minilites. Turned out to be a chopped GT so went straight back to the garage to be replaced with....

MGB Roadster (blue) - has this built for me, Tahiti blue with magnolia leather and the minilites. Loved this car.

Audi A4 TDi avant (grey, which is close to silver)

Land Rover Discovery 4 - for my wife, Bali Blue

Subaru Impreza GB270 (WRC blue) - great car, stuck like glue but the body trim wasn't really compatible with the extreme cambers we have in Scotland.

Range Rover Sport TDV8 (grey, which is close to silver) - sounded mega when you put your foot down, but £100 in fuel was a little much. My wife couldn't understand why I changed it for....

Volvo XC70 (red) - As a commuter car, I couldn't really fault it. My wife however hated it.

Land Rover Freelander (blue) - when we lived in the sticks, was a non-car really.

Lotus Elise S (Sienna Brown, it's OK it's a Porsche colour) - first and probably last new car spec'd by me. Ran it for a year, did 18k miles and only took one day off for ice on the motorway. Absolutely awesome. One day, I'll have another one...

Land Rover Defender 90 (silver) - Went together with the Lotus for winter duties (while we also had the Disco 4). Love the simplicity of the D90. Tonka Toy.

BMW 316i touring (blue) - borrowed / bought from my dad for a short while as a stop gap. On it's last legs and tried to gas us with a leak somewhere putting both fuel and exhaust gases into the cabin. Not good, but drove nice.

Range Rover Evoque (silver) - Thought this was a step up, turned out to be wrong. Inverse Tardis. Horrible blingy thing.

BMW X5 30D (black) - Cousin's other half worked in a main dealer and got us a good discount. Lovely car, just the flared lower half meant we were always terrified of kerbs and everything else out there damaging the paint. Didn't last long. Specc'd new by my wife.

Land Rover Discovery 4 (red) - My wife's next car. The phrase cold dead hands has been used to describe the potential of selling this one. It just does what we need. The D5 isn't going to replace it.

Audi B8 S4 saloon (red) - great while it worked, but the prospect of the S-Tronic shedding total failure all over my drive meant it was got rid of.

Lexus ISF (black, black, black with hints of black) - the current steed, not planning on off loading this unless something awesome comes along.

Hampshire Police ran at least 2 of these in the 90's, not I believe as marked cars. I don't think any other force did.

A cousin of mine was a cop down there back in the day, he said on the open road they were quite a weapon around town a bit unwieldy, with Turbo lag a problem in pursuit situations.

He said the the guy's that used them would say that once the brakes had heated up they did most of their overtaking under hard braking 😂😳😂😳💩💩💩 i think you get the picture .

To be honest , the lag didnt seem so bad as the 3.6 motor on its own was quite strong. As when i bought it the cars wasnt making full boost. Drove like an E39 m5 to be honest .

Great car tho and wish i could of kept it .
